Friday Night Lights. If you played high school football, you will love this book. Those kids from Odessa Permian are incredible. Everything from 6AM practices to The state 5A championship game. The movie and tv show are nowhere near the book. The writer followed that team for the right year.

Couple of great choices that will keep you busy for a while because they start a series of books.
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card. There are number of books following this one in the series and they are all good. None better than this though.
The Gunslinger - Stephen King. Someone already said King but to be specific the Dark Tower series was awesome and very creative. The gunslinger is a very compelling character. The series has ties to many other books that he's written.

If you're into John Grisham-type stuff you should try Vince Flynn. Same kind of topics and they usually only take a couple days to get through (hard to put down).
The latest book I purchased and read was "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close", by Jonathan Safarn Foer. He's a newer writer and the book has to do with 9/11 and how this young kid is dealing with it (don't want to give too much away). One of my favorite books of all time.
For non-fiction someone mentioned Chuck Klosterman; any of his collections on pop culture are fun to read. Also anything by Hunter S. Thompson.
