The Redskins have released assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams and associate head coach-offense Al Saunders, the team announced on Saturday.

"I want to thank Gregg and Al for all they did for the team," Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder said. "In particular, during our most difficult time last year, they both helped hold the team together as we kept moving forward.

"I am confident they will continue to be successful in the years ahead."

Williams joined the Redskins in 2004 as Joe Gibbs' first assistant coaching hire when he returned to the franchise. Williams was previously the head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Williams directed the Redskins' defense the last four seasons. He will be replaced by Greg Blache as the Redskins' defensive boss.

Blache has worked under Williams since 2004; he was previously a defensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

Saunders joined the Redskins following the 2005 season and he served as the primary play-caller on offense the last two years.

He will be replaced by newly named offensive coordinator Jim Zorn, formerly the quarterbacks coach with the Seattle Seahawks.
