A British View of US Presidential Campaigns
From John Pilgar, a respected Brit journalist:

What struck me, living and working in the United States, was that presidential campaigns were a parody, entertaining and often grotesque. They are a ritual danse macabre of flags, balloons and bullsh*t, designed to camouflage a venal system based on money power, human division and a culture of permanent war

the problem is, of course, the deeper truth that you can really only get from respected gambling forum posters, is that the reason it is that way is that the american people as a whole demand it, through their actions. someone who didn't go about it that way would get absolutely mauled at the polls.

dealing with the american voting public (and i've seen it very up close) is like dealing with those incredibly hot, but incredibly stupid chicks you have to deal with in your youth. I don't mean the ones who don't care about being stupid, those women i wouldn't put in the "incredibly stupid" category. i'm talking about the chicks who think they are smart but aren't, and get their intellectual vanities catered to because of how hot they are. you know, the ones who think they are sharp and savvy and claim to like people who are "no bullsh*t" who don't just "tell them what they want to hear" and stuff like that. of course the problem is that what those chicks want to hear is that they aren't being told what they want to hear, so if you don't tell them what they want to hear, they will dis you, and call it something else. the way you get them of course is to tell them exactly what they want to hear, and whoever can put on the best act that they aren't doing that, wins the chick.

so the american voting public is the exact same way. it rewards the people who can do the best combo of saying what it wants to hear while acting like they're not doing that. that's the funny part. there's no nefarious conspiracy or trickery or magical illusion going on, it is the way it is because of millions and millions of people repeatedly making stupid choices, pulling voting levers, not being able to tell who's who, falling for the same tricks every time.
