I need advice on buying a safe
I have a relative living in a nursing home, and his stuff keeps getting stolen. He needs a safe big enough to put a laptop in it. It has to be heavy enough that another old person can't walk off with it. And it needs a key, not a digital keypad. He wouldn't be able to remember the passkey.

Any recommendations? If I buy the one you recommend, I'll send you 50 points.

I don't know of any smaller ones that I'd trust, that you can't bolt to the floor.

And I doubt you want a big one that can fit guns.

And couldn't somebody just take his key when he's sleeping?

My wife works in a nursing home and has both her parents there. They have "night stands" with a reinforced steel drawer on top that locks with a key and most of the residents wear the key on a necklace so only they have access.

Just go into the place during TV time and bitch slap any old random dude you find and then go into a rant abt "and if I ever catch you stealin again from my grandpa I am gonna come back and give you some more the same" look around the room menacing and say "now who else wants some?" (Course. i am assuming you can take all the old dudes at the home)

That should take care of your problem. No points necessary.

A safe with a key sounds like a bad idea. You can buy affordable biometric safes now.

I think any brand safe would do just fine in a nursing home Justin. Sentry is the most well known brand name in the industry I think, but a safe is a safe. I am not sure about the key thing though even some of the best companies out there have made locks that are pickable. Several years ago Kryptonite made a bunch of security locks for motorcycles and ATV's and it turned out that thieves were able to pick the lock with the inners of a BIC pen also many thieves will just spray liquid nitrogen on a chain or inside of a key whole and shatter it with a hammer.

Look for companies which offer an insurance warranty on their safe and if the lock is busted with liquid nitrogen you would be covered.

Might be cheaper and more effective to buy a spy camera.

I know this doesn't help....but I would be more concerned with addressing the theft issue which I guarantee is coming from staff...you should get the safe but I would make some waves on the other issue as well.
