I was pretty naive in school when kids would be talking about certain teachers who they would constantly make fun of that were absolute lushes.I guess I never saw the tell tale signs of them being wasted when I was around them.I thought it was like how people teased Dean Martin and Ed ** Mahon as being severe drunks when in reality they didn't drink much.As it turned out, most of these teachers did die of drinking at a young age.I personally know of about 12 people where the doctor warned them they would die from drinking if they didn't go cold turkey and I thought it was an over reaction but they never quit and all died young.
So this leads to sports and people that were disclosed to be sloshed when either broadcasting games or playing in them.
Pat Summerall comes to mind but he sure hid it well. He's the guy that broke the news and gave his testamony about being a serious alcoholic after he almost died from drinking.I guess on football and golf broadcasting weekends he used to get so desperate for drinks that he would rummage through all the rooms of the broadcast crew where drinks were served and drink the glasses that were left with cigarette butts etc.left in them after sitting all night.
Then there was Howard Cosell who I guess at the end of his career was totally wasted where he was tossing his cookies on Dandy Don etc.during the broadcast.
I guess Guy Le Fleur the hockey player used to drink between periods and someone said he actually smoked on the bench between line changes.
Has anyone seen old NFL films from the 60's and 70's where they show NFL locker rooms at half time and after the game where players were smoking with their uniforms on.That's a hoot!
I think the hall of fame worst drinker-best athlete-most notable player of all time was Mickey Mantle.Boy,they sure hid the lifestyle that guy led from us little kids at the time.I guess George Reeves the guy who played Superman was the same way.Anyone see the movie about him played by Ben Afleck? What a troubled guy.At the time he blew his brains out or died because someone did it to him,all the kids spread the rumor that he died jumping out of a window where he thought he really was superman. Then with Mantle he was first in line to receive a liver transplant and allot of people whose liver was shot by not drinking didn't see kindly to that one.
P.S.Namath did the best drunk interview in history.I don't know the guy but it was funnier than it was sad that he embarrassed himself but all the a-hole elitists ragged on him about it forcing him to declare he was an alcoholic and to get treatment. There are alcoholics and there are problem drinkers who aren't alcoholics that have bad luck getting in embarrassing situations and I think Namath was the later. It's sad nowadays how when you get a little tuned up and do a Namath, everyone comes down on you.
PS Yup,Daly would be in the drunkard jocks hall of fame. That was sad when he got the DT's on the green. He was on tv talking and said a sponsor would have given him a million dollar endorsement but he had to quit drinking beer which he said he can't give up causing him to lose the contract.I heard he took a whole high finish PGA tourney check and spent it on slot machines just down the road from the tournament a few hours after it was over.
