My Las Vegas When I Lived There
I'd be curious if anyone else that has or currently lives in Las Vegas had similar outlooks (many I've met have). I'm not talking about guys who have spent a week here and there at a Strip hotel and left town.

I had worked in the gaming industry my whole life, and always figured I'd wind up out there. The first month or so was pretty cool (granted a drastic change), but I started to realize real quick how demented the place was. I like cities where many of the citizens have some sort of loyality to the city (i.e. 3rd generations and such), and that doesn't exist out there. It seems like everyone who moved out there had some sort of major malfunction (which would be the people serving you tourists your drinks, dealing your cards, etc.), and every girl was molested at an early age or had their daddies beat them and such. There were two suicides in my first month alone on the street I lived on (Vegas has quadruple the suicide rate of the next major city)! I saw the first and only person I've ever seen die from ODing out there too (an image that doesn't soon leave your head). Needless to say there is a huge drug problem throughout the city.

The city was completely deranged and kids growing up there rarely stood a chance, but at least you could bet at big limits. I went back a couple of years ago, and couldn't believe how cheap everywhere was, how incompetent the sportsbook heads were, and how afraid the sportsbooks were of action. As a sidenote it seemed like there were a lot of Asians acting black out there now too. Of course every 21 year old is going to go out there and think they're doing what they think is so wild and crazy, but that's just kids.

I'd be curious to hear more stories from people who have lived there for a year or longer. I only go back for poker tourneys now, and even then often stay with a buddy in Flagstaff and commute everyday lol...

    Cheers...

You know, when the mob ran vegas in the 50's, 60's and even into the mid 70's cops would tell you--it was the best job in America. Virtually no crime, for obvious reasons. As soon as the mob presence was significantly diminished--it became one of the worst areas for crime in America.

    I miss old Vegas.

Well you have too take the pros wit the cons. . . Don't forget about all the great things they have to offer. . . Also, It's not a place to raise a family so don't expect to see many generations there. But if you got money and like the fast paced life style, combined with some discipline to not party to hard , WOW . . . . Well you know the rest

I love Vegas, I have been many times and have stayed off the strip as well, and I do have to say there is just an odd feeling you get from the people there.

For those of you who want to feel a little of what it was like "way back then"--go to the coffee shop in Binions at around 10:00 a.m. for breakfast. After you get to your table and the 65 year old waitress comes to take your order (she has worked there 30 years) ask her for something that is not on the menu: tell her you want a "Natural".

She will begin to ask you some questions and after you have finished answering--prepare to enjoy the finest old style Vegas breakfast you could ever imagine.

              Thank me later.

Hey MSG, outside of the WSOP events, the Venetian and Caesars Palace spread regular $500-$1000 NL events, and I always love all the Omaha events in particular at the Bellagio (before the Bellagio Cup, Five Diamond, and several other events they have throughout the year).

I'm too intrigued not to go on this goosechase next time I'm in town. Lets hope it's worth it!

                            Dittos Big Bullock!

BB,I knew about what you are talking about for years now.I always say that Vegas is a great place to visit and have a ton of fun but you wouldn't want to live there and not raise kids there. It's funny because allot of California people cashed in their chips, sold their houses and moved to Vegas and the people that lived in Vegas for decades and were fed up with living there sold their houses to them and moved to places like St.George,Utah,Elko,Nevada and Boise,Idaho.

Not that I'm a fan of authority figures but it's a hoot to watch COPS on FOX where almost every week it features the mean streets of Vegas. And then the next show after COPS on FOX is America's Most Wanted and no matter where in the world the crime takes place, the perp is always possibly now in the Las Vegas area.

They call Vegas sin city and it is even though I think the real sin city is in Washington D.C.where all the legislation took place to turn a good percentage of our population into ferrel cat type of people that all move to places like Vegas and raise havoc and mayhelm..

I knew a wiseguy slick wheeler dealer in a small town where I live who had a sister that was a very high class convention hooker in Vegas and Atlanta and one day on the way to work at the casino he heard church bells ringing and went to mass and never dealt cards again and moved back to the boonies and became a carpenter.Vegas has an affect like that on some people where they see so much missery that they turn over a new leaf.Have you ever heard the song,Sunday morning sidewalks by Johnny Cash written by Chris Christopherson? It's probably not about Vegas but is sure reminds me of Vegas.

Hell, the mayor Oscar Goodman was the mob frontman lawer that the Stardust crew with Lefty Rosenthal had as a mouthpiece. He was proud to have done a cameo appearance as himself in the movie Casino.

Remember when Johnny carson went sour grapes on Vegas because his comedy routine bombed in a casino. For the next few years he made Vegas women jokes and high ranking people in Vegas didn't appreciate it and threatened to sue him but they couldn't because it was all true.

Do you ever watch the HBO series Deadwood where every down on his luck fortune seeker goes there as their last chance to make it big?Vegas is 2000 times bigger than Deadwood and you have 2000 times more con men, ripoff artists, boiler room cold call solicitors, hookers, people making snuff movies, talent agents taking nudie photos with no film in their cameras, mob connected penny stock pump and dumpers.etc.etc.etc.etc.

Then the cherry on the sundae or the frosting on the cake are the raunchy ads that say, what goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas. That's all a wife has to hear who's husband and father of their 4 kids goes there alone for a convention has to hear. You would think they could have come up with something better than that raunchy catch phrase. They should have probably used, come to Las Vegas ,it's everyone's adopted 2nd home town.
