Showing solidarity for the US, both the UK and Israel pull out while the whole of the Middle East and most off the rest of Europe backs China’s boycott. The Opening ceremonies are held anyway with just three countries showing up: Egypt, Cuba and Canada. The Cubans pull of the gold medal lead thanks to a large effort in the canoeing finals.

                          Sep 14, South Bend, IN – Following their fortuitous 28-27 win over Michigan the day before, the AP votes Notre Dame the No. 1 team in the nation with a 2-0 record. Charlie Weis is elated, and then the Irish lose their next five, including a 45-14 ass-whipping at North Carolina.

Both players are ejected along with Dallas owner Jerry Jones and former Bengals star Ickey Woods who was a guest of the team on their sidelines for the big game. Woods is immediately hired by ESPN as a studio analyst after the game, win by the Bengals on a last second field goal, 24-21.

                          Nov 1, Detroit, MI – Cubs win!, Cubs win! Cubs win! With temperatures dipping into the low 30s by game's end, Chicago closer Kerry Wood records his fourth save of the World Series as the Cubs beat the Tigers 5-3 in Game 7 of the World Series to win their first championship in 100 years. Wood is named the series MVP, with Derrek Lee batting a cool .333 with two homers and six RBI for Chicago.

                          Nov 23, Green Bay, WI – Packers QB Brett Favre is sacked seven times and has to be carted off the field early in the third period of Green Bay’s 35-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders. It is the Packers’ third loss in a row, and without Favre who will be lost for the season with a back injury, their chances don’t look good. At a news conference the next day held during his surgery that is performed with local anesthetics, Favre say’s he’s not ruling out a return in 2009.

                          Dec 6, Atlanta, GA – Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators complete a perfect 13-0 season with a 28-10 win over LSU in the SEC Championship. Tebow runs for a score and passes for two more and will pick up his second Heisman Trophy a week later. The Gators finish the regular season No. 1 in the BCS and will face No. 2 USC (11-1) in the championship.
