COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Former Ohio State University running back Maurice Clarett was accused of using a gun to rob two people in an alley behind a bar early Sunday and taking a cellphone, police said.
Clarett, 22, who helped the Buckeyes win the national championship in 2002, fled when the bar owner or manager, who knew Clarett and the victims, came into the alley and identified him shortly before 2 a.m., detectives said.

According to police, he left the scene in a white sport-utility vehicle with two other men and got only the cellphone from his alleged victims. Neither was hurt.

Clarett is wanted on two counts of suspicion of aggravated robbery, police said.

Clarett sat out the 2003 season after he was charged with misdemeanor falsification for filing a police report claiming that more than $10,000 in clothing, CDs, cash and stereo equipment was stolen from a car he borrowed from a local dealership. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Ohio State suspended Clarett for misleading investigators, and for receiving special benefits worth thousands of dollars from a family friend.

He later began an unsuccessful legal fight that went to the U.S. Supreme Court to be allowed in the NFL early. He was chosen by the Denver Broncos in last year's draft, but the team cut him in August.

Former Ohio State star running back Maurice Clarett, who failed to catch on with an NFL team after being cut by the Denver Broncos last year, has an oral agreement to play with an indoor league team, the Columbus Post-Dispatch reported Thursday.

Clarett was expected to sign a contract with the Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Hitmen of the Eastern Indoor Football League, the newspaper reported.

Hitmen coach Jim Terry said he sent the contract to Clarett on Wednesday, the Post-Dispatch reported.

"I've never seen a player this excited at this level of play," Terry said of Clarett, the newspaper reported. "This isn't a runner's league. It's a passer's league. And (Clarett) is going to try to make it on the ground."

Clarett led Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, then was suspended and took on the NFL in court, challenging the requirement that players wait three years after high school before turning pro. After losing on appeal, he was drafted by the Denver Broncos, then cut before the team's first game last fall. He hasn't played since the 2003 Fiesta Bowl against Miami.

It's unclear if Clarett will ever play for the Hitmen, because the team currently has just four players on its roster, the newspaper reported.

The Hitmen plan to hold open tryouts in August, the newspaper reported, and Terry hopes the league will begin play in January or February.

"I don't want this to be like a bowling league with a new guy or new team leaving every year," Terry said, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Clarett fires attorneys with trial looming

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Two weeks before his trial on aggravated burglary and weapons charges, former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett does not have an attorney.
In a single-paragraph letter Clarett wrote on July 20, he said he fired attorneys William Settina and Robert Krapenc. They filed a motion Monday saying they do not wish to continue as Clarett's lawyers, saying he has not paid their fees and is not cooperating in his own defense.

Court documents do not list any other attorney for Clarett.

Common Pleas Judge David S. Fais scheduled a hearing for Thursday morning to address the situation.

Clarett, 22, turned himself in on Jan. 2 to face charges of flashing a gun and robbing two people in an alley behind a bar.

As a freshman, Clarett scored the winning touchdown in the second overtime to lead Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, the school's first since 1968. But that was the last game he played for the Buckeyes.

He sat out the 2003 season after being charged with misdemeanor falsification on a police report. After dropping out of school, he sued to be included in the 2004 NFL draft and lost in court.

A surprise third-round pick in the 2005 draft, he was cut by the Denver Broncos during the preseason.

He has been free on a recognizance bond since his indictment on Feb. 10. He is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of robbery and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.

Maurice Clarett was bankrolled by an alleged member of an Israeli crime organization after leaving Ohio State, ESPN.com reported, and Clarett's attorney said yesterday that his client may have been in possession of firearms last week to protect himself against mob activity.

Clarett's attorney, Nick Mango, said Clarett has repeatedly received death threats over the past year but that a cryptic postcard sent from Los Angeles last week has him wondering about Clarett's ties to an alleged mob enforcer.

In the late summer of 2004, ESPN.com reported, Clarett traveled to Los Angeles and was introduced by a rapper friend to Hai Waknine, 35, a convicted felon who prosecutors believe is a member of an Israeli crime organization called The Jerusalem Group. Waknine reportedly became Clarett's sponsor and adviser, along with Waknine's attorney, David Kenner.

Waknine provided Clarett with cash, a BMW, bodyguards, drivers and beachfront lodging in Malibu, with the understanding that he would receive 60 percent of Clarett's rookie contract, according to ESPN.com.

But when Clarett was released by the Denver Broncos in August 2005, he was unable to pay Waknine back, and Waknine eventually cut off Clarett financially, ESPN.com reported.

Same as baseball and basketball. If they're good enough to be drafted coming out of high school then let them sign a contract and make money. If they're good enough to be signed after one or two years in college, then the same should apply.

not all the courts did. originally the court decided in his favor and then the nfl got on their high horse for the appeal and "surprisingly" won. i'm quite confident that soon someone will put together a solid attack against this weak position and the nfl will be forced to allow it. someday the nflpa will take a stand also. it's just a matter of time.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A fired attorney for Maurice Clarett said Friday an assistant prosecutor offered a plea deal in July with a sentence as short as 11/2 years if the ex-Ohio State football standout admitted to a robbery charge.

On Friday, Clarett was in court for a status hearing on that January robbery charge. He is scheduled to go on trial Sept. 18, pending a mental evaluation, on charges that he held up two people outside a Columbus bar early New Year's Day and took a cell phone from them.

During the 20-minute hearing, Judge David Fais ruled he will not issue a gag order in the case. Clarett spoke just once, responding "yes, sir" when Judge Fais asked if he understood the proceedings. He turned to smile at his mother and two friends who sat behind him.

Fired attorney Bob Krapenc, who sat in on Clarett's hearing, told reporters afterward that the former Ohio State running back, Krapenc and his partner met in July with assistant prosecutor Doug Stead about a plea deal. Krapenc said Clarett had not decided whether to accept the deal and admit to a felony robbery count in return for a five-year sentence with the option to apply for release after 11/2 years.

Clarett fired Krapenc and his partner about two weeks later.

It's not clear if the deal is still on the table, and Stead would not comment Friday.

Clarett's current attorneys said they were trying to find out more about the meeting.

"Certainly, anyone who had an opportunity to talk to my client prior to my representation of my client is someone I need to talk to," said Nick Mango, Clarett's attorney.

Clarett has been jailed since Aug. 9 when he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon after officers found four loaded guns in his SUV after a police chase that began near the home of a woman set to testify against him in the robbery case. Officers said they had to use pepper spray to subdue him because he was wearing a bullet-proof vest that thwarted their stun guns.
