At this moment, 198 satoshis/byte is the minimum to send if you don't want to wait hours. Subject to change of course. If you don't already, check this link for updated fees before sending: https://bitcoinfees.earn.com/

I use Electrum, they keep it updated and I've never experienced any issues.

Fees are always going to be higher and confirmation time slower when there is a large backlog of transactions.

Bitcoin may not be the "best" blockchain but it was the first which is why it's unlikely it will ever be overtaken. It's like the crypto version of gold.
