this is BS and it needs to be changed. ref's shouldn't allow coach's to stand right next to them and call a TO right as the kicker kicks the ball.

#2Why? It doesn't seem any different to me than icing a free throw shooter in baseketball.Originally posted by remmy358this is BS and it needs to be changed. ref's shouldn't allow coach's to stand right next to them and call a TO right as the kicker kicks the ball.

#3point being that in basketball they can't call a timeout right when the guy shoots the ball, and the shot doesn't count.Originally posted by Doc JSWhy? It doesn't seem any different to me than icing a free throw shooter in baseketball.
it is way different. in football, the ball is kicked and there is a result.Comment -

#4Stoops did not call a timeout with the score tied and just .02 left. Colo nailed the 40+ yard FG. You got teenagers playing before 75,000 fans and in front of TV cameras... call the TO.Comment -

#5i think it's fair to call it before the kicker takes off to kick. that's totally fair. but to call it right before the snap so the play actually takes place is BSOriginally posted by SBR_JohnStoops did not call a timeout with the score tied and just .02 left. #6remmy, i assume your talking about that florida game last night. i didn't know they could do it like that either, i thought you had to call it before the offense got totally set. i think it is silly that you can let both teams get totally set and a split second before the snap call a timeout. cause a ref's whistle all the way on the sideline isin't going to be heard with the crowd noise, i think a defensive player has to call it, like let the offense start getting set, and the defense act like they're getting set and then stand back up real quick and call a timeout. having a coach whisper in the ear of an official at the last split second is wrong.Comment -

#7That is coaching basic strategy. "Icing the kicker" lowers the FG rate about 20% - there was an article in Science News about it.Comment -

#8It worked when Shanny did it against the Raiders.
They may change the rule at the end of the season. But until then, I think you can expect to see more of it for the rest of the college and professional season.Comment -

#9icing the kicker is one thing.
making him kick a game winner that is then taken away is complete horse shit.
bush league crap that should not be allowed.
i think even some florida fans were rooting for them to lose after that nonsense.Comment -

#11Btw, its rally crappy in Madden to get that annoying heartbeat and ground level camera view when trying to kick a game winning FG from 51 yards. A little OT, sorry.Comment -

#12Then the Raiders did it the next week against the Browns. Browns made the one that didn't count, then the Raiders blocked the second attempt on the game winner.Originally posted by Doc JSIt worked when Shanny did it against the Raiders.
I think they should have to call the timeout before the teams get set. That is also icing the kicker.Comment -

#13But in other situations, teams can call time out after the offense is set, and we accept that it makes sense to permit that -- for example, to prevent a penalty for too many men on the field.
It'd be awfully difficult, and I would argue, foolish, to distinguish the situations where time-outs should be permitted from those where they shouldn't.
These guys are essentially pros. Make 'em grow up and deal with it -- permit time-outs whenever the ball isn't in play. And given that they're permitted, it would be folly for a coach not to use the strategy.Comment
