This is the absurdist police comedy new out on DVD this week from the UK makers of Shaun of the Dead.
It is currently the #140 movie of all time at imdb.com.
I found it pretty good, although I feel like it should and probably will slide down in the all-time rankings. It's not that good.
This is another one of those movies that I hear repeatedly described as HILARIOUS but my reaction is a more subued, "clever and good for some chuckles." Only towards the end did I start having more laugh-out-loud moments.
It is too long IMO. 121 minutes. They could/should have chopped out 20 minutes.
It is quite clever though. It has some talented actors in it. Apart from Oscar winners Jim Broadbent and Cate Blanchett (you have to be sharp to spot her) and screen veterans Bill Nighy, Timothy Dalton and Steve Coogan, I think Simon Pegg steals the show. Not that there is any shame in being very good at comedy - just the opposite - but I could see him branching into serious drama down the road.
(Lord of the Rings Director Peter Jackson also has a quick appearance. Even moreso than with Blanchett, you have to be on your toes to spot it).
Anyway, as I tend to do, I have placed too much focus on the negative. Although I am tougher-than-average to make laugh, a lot of people really do think it's hilarious. It is original and entertaining and stylish, and I give it a thumbs up.
