3 years and 3 months after Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire, in Afghanistan, and military commanders covered up the embarrassing fact that the football star-turned-army ranger was shot by his fellow soldiers Army Secretary Peter Geren Tuesday announced punishment.
The retired three star General Philip Kensinger has been reprimanded and recommended for possible demoted for lying to investigators.
But every other officer in Afghanistan and on the phone to Tillman's family was not punished
"Everybody seeking truth to make sure they got it right," said Army Vice Chief of Staff General Richard Cody.
The army says Tillman's commanders thought they were required to keep his friendly fire investigation secret.
"Almost incredibly but true this was shared up and down chain of command," said Secretary of the Army Geren.
His tightly clustered bullet wounds suggested that to some investigators that Tillman was shot on purpose.
But the army Tuesday denied that, along with any politically motivated cover-up
"Sadly these, have distracted, itself a tragedy, died under attack others actions and pat Tillman a hero." Said Geren.
and the army says Tillman earned the Silver Star he was awarded after his death by friendly fire.
