Bad Craps Bets
I say hop bet has to be the worst bet playing craps, and this guy doesn't even acknowledge it.

Pretty sure the "Any 7" on the next roll is worse at about a 17% house edge.

Great VIDEO. I'm reminded of my youth. I learned all these basics by the time I was out of first grade.By age seven I had marked out a craps layout on the back of a sewing board and was operating a craps game with my childhood friends. We would play for marbles.

There isn't a good bet on the craps table. The best bets are where you can place lots of odds on your bet. Taking the pass line and maxing out on the free odds. It's just a matter of how bad you want to take it. That being said, on a real hot table you almost "have" to make money. And on a real cold table no matter what you bet it's gone quickly.

A bet on "Seven" paying 4:1, yields a whopping house edge of 16.67%, which is indeed the worst bet on the table.

"The Field" sports a house edge of "only" 5.56% if the 12 pays out at 2:1, and 2.78% if the 12 pays out at 3:1.

Some felt reads "5 for 1", others "4 to 1" or "4:1".

All 3 typically mean the same thing, namely payout odds of +400.

Where are these hot tables you guys refer to?

Can you tell just by touching the table, or do I need to carry a thermometer around the casino?

These hot tables can be found using the following techniques:

Look for older italian looking guys who have lost their rugs during all the action and heads are now beat red.

These tables will have lots of chips in play, they act as a heat sink to try and cool the table off. If the table doesn't cool down, watch for a white faced older guy (known as a cooler) to be brought to the table.

The rule with craps is get up and get out...... cuz if you stay you'll give it all back and then some.

Even worst than a hard 4 hopping Ganchrow?

Yes. Even worse.

4 the hard way pays out at 7-1, and wins 1/9 of the time that the bet resolves (i.e., on any 4 or 7). This implies a house edge of 1 - 8 * 1/9 ≈ 11.11% per bet resolution.

Betting any hard hop (all of which pay out at 30-1 at occur with probability 1/36), the house edge is 1 - 31 * 1/36 ≈ 13.89%.

Both of these are house edges are still less than the 16.67% house edge on the "Any Seven" paying at 4:1.
