On July 19, 2007 three more congressional representatives signed on to co-sponsor Barney Frank's bill H.R.2046 (Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act) to bring to 31 the number of congressman that hope to see it become law.
Representatives Michael M. Honda [CA-15], Albert Russell Wynn [MD-4], and Steven R. Rothman [NJ-9] have joined the fight to correct an ill-advised bill (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) that was improperly added to a Homeland Security Bill at the last minute with no ability to debate it, and signed into law last October by President George W Bush that makes financial transactions to illegal offshore gambling companies illegal.
In April of this year, Congressman Barney Frank [D-MA], Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee introduced this bill which creates a regulatory and enforcement framework to license companies to accept bets and wagers online from American citizens. Included in the bill are provisions that would provide protections for underage and compulsive gamblers, money laundering, and fraud.
"The existing legislation is an inappropriate interference on the personal freedom of Americans and this interference should be undone," said. Rep. Frank upon introducing HR 2046.
Frank went on to state that "traditional forms of legalized gambling already exist in nearly every state. By continuing to prohibit Internet gambling in the U.S., the U.S. has left Americans who choose to gamble online without meaningful consumer protections. The proposed legislation would institute practical and enforceable standards to bring transparency to Internet gambling and provide consumers the protections they expect and deserve."
Barney Frank has called on Americans to be pro-active and voice their opinions. If the American people want to gamble online, it is important that they reach out to their congressperson and state their views.
"It is imperative that all Americans that are concerned about this issue contact their congressional representative by calling, writing either by email or snail mail, and also to encourage friends and family to do the same," said Gordon Price, Casino Gambling Web's analyst.
Casino Gambling Web hosts a page of all representative phone numbers, email addresses, and snail mail addresses, and they also started the Public Outcry Campaign to encourage Americans to voice their concerns.
"Congressmen from New York, California, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, Colorado, North Carolina, Alaska, Florida, Mississippi, Nevada, Massachusetts, Indiana, Texas, Washington, and Maryland have signed on. If your state is not one of those, you need to do more," said Price.
Casino Gambling Web is also sponsoring a petition to repeal the UIGEA and is sending a team of representative to Washington D.C. with information both pro and con on the issue, to give to all congressional representatives, along with comments from thousands of Americans that have signed the petition to enlighten lawmakers.
