Kroeger's?$1.99 a quart wine wins 1st place.Wine&baseball team snobs the same!
This one has been all over the news.California just had a big wine contest with allot of expensive wines competing along with some not so expensive wines. The wine expert snobs didn't know how much each wine cost and picked the Kroeger $1.99 wine as the 1st place medal winner. It's got a nickname Jack and something??????I'm sure the wine snob judges were beside themselves and flustered that the low brau wine they picked as best fooled them.So the $1.99 bottle of wine was like +40000 on the moneyline.I never could quite figure why a person would pay a few grand for a bottle of wine that a slob could guzzle in a few minutes.Just think of all the $5 pizza buffets,$9.99 all you can eat shrimp and steak buffets and $8 a case cheap beer you can drink for a year everday for the price of that one bottle of wine.

Anyway, some ESPN types on the radio and other sportscasters that dabble in betting talk just a wee bet always pick a couple teams each year to just belittle and when the best teams play them starting their ace pitcher these guys are saying that there is no way possible the Royals or Pirates could beat them etc. Then the next day after the huge underdog wins they don't say anything and go on to pick on the next underdog playing the best team.

In my opinion there isn't allot of difference between the best team in baseball starting their best pitcher against the worst team starting their worst pitcher. In most games there are no errors or glaring mistakes to slant the game in favor of the best team.It comes down to the best team's extra power hitter having a great game or the ace pitcher pitching as expected or better and the other teams worst pitcher not having a good game etc.

So there are allot of similarities between wine snobs and people who think a great baseball team is a mortal lock over a bad baseball team.

Searched all over the news and found nothing.

      Still waiting.

The reason I ask is that this seems like one of those urban myths. I drink wine and follow the business, and never heard this. In fact, I would be very surprised if Kroger even sold a bottle of wine for 1.99.

Sounds like sour grapes (pun intended)

I dont even think Boones Farm is 1.99 a "quart" (as if they sold wine by the quart).

Im putting boones farm at 3.99 per quart.

And there is no way on Gods green earth that anyone, wine expert or wino, could mistake the taste of boones farm or MD20/20. No way.

              I did see this:

              'Two-Buck Chuck' wins wine competition

By: BRADLEY J. FIKES - Staff Writer

Vin d'Expensive? Meritage Snooty? If that's the kind of name you were thinking would grace a winner of the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, get ready for a shock.

Try "Two-Buck Chuck," more formally Charles Shaw, the brand beloved of bargain but palate-sensitive wine shoppers. It's sold by Bronco Wine Co. exclusively through Trader Joe's.

Shaw's California Chardonnay took first place for Best Chardonnay from California. To some in the clubby California wine community, that must seem like a Michelin's Red Guide giving three stars to a roadside hamburger stand.

The Chardonnay received 98 points, a double gold, with accolades of Best of California and Best of Class.

"Since we judge all wines totally by variety without different brackets for price, this double-gold achievement by the Bronco winemakers is astounding," G.M. Pucilowski, chief judge and director of the competition, said in a Bronco Wine Co. press release.

While the complete results of the competition are to be announced July 12, Renata Franzia, from Bronco's Franzia family received the results Thursday.

Richard Peterson, veteran winemaker and a State Fair judge for 20 years, said in the release, "We have the most open judging I know. There is nothing to bias judging. We get numbered glasses. We don't know the region, brand or price. We evaluate the judges frequently to make sure they're tops in the field. Charles Shaw won because it is a fresh, fruity, well-balanced Chardonnay that people and wine judges ---- though maybe not wine critics ---- will like."

Bronco president Fred Franzia said in an interview that customers have proven to be discerning, buying more than 300 million bottles of Charles Shaw brand wines over the years.

"The consumers are way ahead of the judges here, and now the judges have figured it out," Franzia said in the interview. And there's more of this vintage on the way, Franzia said, so there will be a plentiful supply.

Franzia's next challenge is winning over the restaurant industry. "The restaurants are overcharging consumers for wine. If we could just get restaurants to sell wine at $10 a bottle, or $2.50 a glass, or less, heaven forbid. If I can sell 'em to Trader Joe's for $2 a bottle, and they can get five glasses out of it, you'd think they could sell it for $2.50 a glass and make consumers happy."

And yes, Franzia said, Two-Buck Chuck will remain $2 ---- the price isn't going to increase.

If this is the story, then I apologize for my comments above.

Although you cant really buy shaws chardonnay for 2 bucks a bottle, I understand the story.
