Take out Gray, Liriano, Corbin, Matt Moore

Add Jordan Zimmerman, Kris Medlen, Homer Bailey, & Big Game James Shield.

If we're speculating on Gray...and I think he'll be really good...Danny Salazar should be in the top 25 too.D

Don't think I'd have CJ Wilson or Tanaka on the list either...at least not yet. Maybe put a Shelby Miller or Gio Gonzalez in their place.

    Edit: Definitely add Bumgarner

PRetty accurate post but Homer Bailey is weak sauce. Medlen also.
James Shields may be the worst luck pitcher I have seen. Guy is an underrated beast.

As for the list, CJ wilson, Tanaka, Cain, Corbin, Minor, and Cole all not even close.

Gio Gonzalez is in my top 10. Chris Sale also.
I'd still take Verlander over Scherzer in the long run.

Minor, Medlen, and Teheran all have a chance to be top 25 this year.

    Yea I missed Sale.

I like Bailey and Medlen...but if I'm adding Sale, Zimmerman, Bumgarner, and Shields would I have them in the top 25 anymore? Proabably not.

Sale is a beast. Sleeper to win AL Cy Young. Even on the White Sox.

yeah Gio has great stuff but sometimes his control is not there. Last year he left alot of pitches around the middle of the plate... but he gets a ton of K's..

the year before last though he was def top 10.

i like Gio i hope he bounces back this season

i could see you being right about the Nationals winning it all this year Benny.

the good thing about them is they are young and durable and can withstand the long season..

do you think they have enough good hitters though ?

why is that? just not a fan?

the thing i like about betting baseball is that every day in the summer you have a big card of games to choose from and MLB doesnt seem to be fixed at all. I truly believe in MLB you dont have to worry about who the public is on and you dont even have to pay attention to line movement...
it seems to be the most pure sport their is from a betting stand point.

yeah the thing is on any given day any one of these guys can be the best.

But you are right stuff wise Fernandez might be the most electric pitcher in the game when he is on.

@Benji xFIP is just an experimental saber stat.
    Not that relevant

Bear, how can you rate a pitcher (Tanaka) as a top 25 starter in MLB when he never has faced a MLB batter?
And while I am at it how can you omit Bumgardner? I mean he's like the third best lefty in the majors.

Pitchers like Sonnny Gray, Cingrani, Wacha, et al, should not be considered top 10 (I said top ten, not 25) until they have put in three solid years of work. The exception is Yarvish, and maybe Jose Fernanadez who I have been following since he escaped Cuba.

Fernandez's arsenal is insane. Four seamer that averages about 94 and approaches 98 every now and than.
His two seemer has ridiculous arm side movement, all scouting cards have both fastballs rated at +
His best pitch, and I've seen it up close and personal from behind the cage is his slider, thing cuts like a motherfukker.
Doesn't really have a change up, well he doesn't really need one. I hear he's developing on though.
His mechanics are sound, he's 6'2 240lbs, mostly mass. Bulldog mentality, no nonsense approach, gimme the ball, pitch the ball mentality,
Pisses hitters off without being an asshole about it.

I can go on and on, but you get it.
Here's the thing, Fernandez has only 170 MLB innings under his belt, seven year established pro hitters will adjust to him faster than he can adjust.

Another thing is the a little over 3 walks per nine average, let's get that down a little.
Is he the real deal? Fuk yeah, if he makes all 33 starts this season, I expect 7 of them to be "Holy shit" I expect 4 of those 33 starts where he gets either roughed up or has no command and never gets to the fifth, and I expect the 22 or so starts to be above average.

If I had one pitcher to choose from to build around my franchise, it's Fernandez, however if I had one pitcher to choose from to anchor my staff for 2014, not 2014 and beyond, and maybe 2014 and beyond its Clayton Kershaw.

Kershaw is the best pitcher in baseball, and that is not even up for discussion, it's not open for debate.
He is this generations Greg Maddux and Pedro Martinez.

Hasn't missed a start in 5 years, he is on a current three year run that many consider one of the best three year consecutive runs since the expansion era started. Won two of the last three Cy Youngs, some say should have won all three Cy Youngs.

Makes every start, goes 8 innings almost every start, strikes out 9 a start, every start, walks two, gives up 5 hits, 2 runs.
Think about it, every time Kershaw makes a start his pitching line is pretty much this 8 IP, 2ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 9 SO

Second best in baseball you can make a case for Cliff Lee, Adam Wainwright, Darvish, King, and Chris Sale.
Sale is a monster, his two year across the board numbers are eye popping, he's the type of lefty nobody wants to face, his heater is nasty. He's the pitcher to watch out for in the AL this season.

    Somebody mentioned Salazar.
He's not a top 25 starter, not even close.
He has the talent to be, but is not a top tier pitcher yet.
Same as Brandon Beachy, love the guy, if he stays healthy could be a very good one.

Top 25 means staff ace, or a #2 guy who cold be a staff ace someplace else.
Like a Scherzer for instance, oir Greinke

Look at some of the staff aces around the league, most don't really blow you away.

Arizona - Corbin, a nice starter, but a game changer?
Atlanta - Medlen? Same as above.
Cubs - Samardjiza - Does he really strike fear into opposing lineups?
    Rox - Chacin. Get real
Brewers - Gallardo, used to be a top 25, no more.
Mets - Colon (No Matt Harvey this year)
    San Diego - Ian Kennedy
    Baltimore - Chen
    Houston - Feldman
    Twins - Nolasco

Nash, without quoting your entire reply, I think Bear and others are basing their rankings off the premise of "Who will be the top-25 starters in 2014". This question doesn't factor in past performance at all, it's just a prediction for a new year. Which is why you can rate guys like Gray, Wacha, Tanaka, etc. highly if that's how you feel it will play out.

that list looks good. This thread has been interesting to read.

i disagree with Nashes comment that you must have 3 years in the league before being considered top 25 and that you can only have 1 top 25 per team....

but thats just my opinion. I'm just trying to come up with rankings for the top 25 maybe top 100 pitchers for "this 2014 season"

who knows maybe Archie Bradley and Taijuan Walker are top 50 caliber by seasons end..

Yikes. You obviously must have watched Wacha pitch. He has one of the best change ups I have ever seen. Pedro-like. And Gray looked extremely polished and unfazed in the playoffs last season for a kid that young. No way I'm taking Cingrani over either of them. Just my opinion, though.

When it comes to those three, Wacha, Gray, and Cingranni, everybody who knows baseball has a very different opinion, I mean very different.

I lineup with Di Fino, where you line up more with Scott White (who is terrific by the way)
What's funny is, I am a data analyst by trade, (I'm an I/T operations analyst) and you would think I would line up with Al Melchior, who is a data analyst as well
