Ok, now you all can see where this slippery slope can lead to: ghost ghosts, then ghost ghost ghosts, and so on and so on. Amiable Doofus is a ghost ghost of me.

But if Amiable Doofus starts to stir things up in a way that harms me somehow, then I, myself, will actually have to create a ghost of Amiable Doofus, to do damage control. That handle that I create will then be a ghost ghost ghost. In other words a ghost of AD, which is a ghost of a ghost of me.

Interestingly, as in so many other aspects of modern life, we have come full circle; internet screennames and ghosts are pure, distilled machiavellianism. It doesn't matter who you really are, just who you can make people think you are. But it's so distilled that it doesn't matter at all who anyone is or who anyone thinks anyone is. All that ultimately matters, is the truth or wisdom of the posts. There exists only knowledge on these boards, no identity, just like in the universal singularity.

Also, ghosts are like 527s in politics, like the Swift Boat guys. If the political landscape were a message board, Karl Rove and Dick Cheney would have thousands of ghosts each.

Yes a ghost is when one person has two or more screennames, so that that person can engineer complex and devilishly clever deceptions to achieve whatever ends he seeks to achieve.

For instance, I might make a ghost screenname/persona, perhaps make the character a friendly, amiable and good-natured but none-too-bright doofus, to congratulate me on my good picks and point out how well I'm doing to various people on the board. ......................

Thank you, GanchrowHG, for taking the time to explain. I didn't know there was so much going on here. In the short time I've been here I thought it was just a place for some very impressive high level math and some sometimes entertaining low level humor, along with some valuable info and advice.

I recognize BC1984 as a Covers reference and it isn't the guy that was Winston Smith here. At Covers, Winston Smith used the handle 29a.

Personally I don't call a different ID on a completely different forum a ghost. To me, a ghost is using multiple ID's at the same forum, usually for deceptional and/or pathetic purposes.

As for the Ganchrow idea, I believe BC1984 is from Australia or New Zealand so that is not a match.

Is BetCrimes even here at SBR? I've never seen him. If you're here BC (under that or another name), send me a PM.

You offered to tell me where he is now. You already said he is Ganchrow so I don't know what you might say now but, sure, I am curious.

I wouldn't have a terribly hard time believing the BC-to-Ganchrow connection; I can think of a number of similarities, one in particular that is very striking. But I feel sure BC is from down Oceania way and Ganchrow is American.
