Only 3 downs and yes it's still 10 yards for a first down, which creates alot more passing which generally equals a more exciting product.......however the quality of the player is vastly inferior.

Vastly inferior is an understatement. However it is an exciting game from a viewers standpoint. The field is larger which opens up some large opportunities. The players in the CFL can't make it or are washed up products of the NFL. Or are lawyers looking to get banged up to prove they are men.

You couldn't be more incorrect. The CFL is an entirely different game with different rules than the NFL and it favours a different type of player. You cannot comapre the two leagues like that because they are vastly different.

With a 40% larger field area, only 3 downs to make 10 yards and a 25 second clock between plays the CFL favours smaller, faster and more fit players especially on the lines and more mobile quarterbacks. There are many offensive linemen under 300 lbs because you need a smaller lineman with speed to cover a larger field and on the defensive line speed is favoured over size because of the higher number of opportunities to pressure the QB while passing. Also, the 25 second clock favours players who are better physical shape not only because there is less rest between plays but also because it creates (in conjunction with vastly different clock rules) a higher total number of plays per game.

So the CFL is filled with players who were standouts in the NCAA but were passed over by the NFL because they simply lacked the size for their chosen position. If you are on the O or D lines and you don't meet a specific size requirement, you aren't even considered in the NFL draft. Many of these players go on to excel in a league where smaller is better.

There are many other reasons why the leagues cannot be compared in this way but I'll stop here.

Where the CFL really does hurt itself is with its Canadian content rules. The level of play in the CIAU is embarrassingly bad so forcing teams to dress players simply because they are Canadian brings down the level of play in the league as a whole. Fortunately this is changing because NCAA schools have started recruiting from Canada more heavily in the past 10 years so there are Canadian players coming out of school with NCAA level coaching. Add in the fact that football is catching up to hockey as a youth sport in this country and the gap in player talent is growing narrower each year.

The other thing that is completely bush league about the CFL is their officiating. But that is a story for another post.

I wasn't trying to compare the leagues. I have gone and still go to a CFL game. Mike Clemens was an excellent example of someone who suited the CFL but could never make it in the NFL. Doug Fluitie as well.

On a player by player basis they players are not as good as their NFL counterparts. I do believe the CFL hurts themselves by imposing a canadian content, but that's the canadian way. See cancon for radio play for example.

I didn't say they weren't athletes or were lacking somehow in playing the game (altho watching the argo QB's in their opener might lead one to believe that)

The CFL couldn't make it in the US and they tried. If the NFL came to Toronto the argos would be toast. I'll be content to bet on both and recognized thier differences. But a guy like Jock Climey won't ever be confused for even a no body in the NFL.

So you are telling me that if the CFL's best players played against the NFL's best players, the CFL would have a shot? No way in hell. Reggie Bush would run circles around CFL players; Urlacher would knock at least two people out of the games; Peyton Manning would have a career day.

I am sorry but the NFL only accepts the BEST of the BEST.

No that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that its not so easy to compare the 2 leagues when the game is so different. Such a game could never take place because the differences are so vast. There are NFL players though that wouldn't be able to play in the CFL because their size and skills are not suited to the game.

I will agree that the NFL is the premiere football league in the world. The reason I get somewhat defensive about the CFL is that I constantly hear people making silly statements about the talent level of the league or comparing the CFL to NCAA Div 3 or the World League which is laughable. The talent gap is not nearly as wide as people think and the CFL is clearly the second best football league talent-wise.
