Someone in another thread brought up Joe Torre and how he's the worst baseball manager in the big leagues now.In my opinion, there isn't much difference between a good baseball manager and a bad one. There are always a couple savvy seasoned veteran players that could step into the roll of manager for Christ sake. When a manager gets tossed out of a game by the ump the team does about the same with the 3rd base coach making decisions.Sure, you have your disciplinarian type and I want to be your friend type managers and depending on the makeup of a team one fits better than the other. They say that the jockey makes up 15% of the quality of a horses ride in a race and for a baseball manager it's probaby 5% of the total output of a teams game performance. So maybe an average jockey can get the 10% out of a horse and a great one 20%.An average baseball manager gets 4% out of a team and a great manager 6%.That's all a percentage contributing to the success of a horse's and baseball teams ability.
I know this for a fact because I knew a guy that played under both Holtz in college and then played for Vermiel in the pros and according to him these guys weren't much more than mascots letting all the other coaches run the show. They were just motivational cheerleaders. It was like buying one of those toy plastic steering wheels and brake pedals for your kid to sit in the passenger seat where he pretended to drive the car.I have a sneaky suspicion it works that way with Joe Paterno too. They probably just give Joe a coloring book and crayons and put a head set on him that isn't connected to anything but maybe some Barney the purple dinasaur music.
I just acquired an 8by 10 autographed photo of Vermiel,Holtz and Paterno and I swear I can see baby food and pablum smudged on the photos and they came in an empty Depends box.
