If you aren't betting the PGA, then you could be missing out
I realize golf isn't for everyone and if you don't like the sport watching it on tv can be brutal. But I made big money this weekend and am learning how to really spot excellent betting opportunities.

Heading into the last day I was already plus units following several winners in earlier round and tourney matchups. But then the windfall --

    I loved two matchups:
Toms over Scott. I had to give a half stroke, but was betting at +102. Scott was in first place by three strokes but he hadn't been doing a good job over three days. Looking at his stats revealed that he was barely 60 percent on fairways hit over the previous three rounds. in fact, in the second round he was just at 50 percent. He had done a good job of scrambling up to that point in the tournament. That stat usually catches up to players -- eventually missing fairways will catch up to you. So I took Toms, who had been playing very consistently throughout the tournament -- not a lot of birdies but not a lot of bogeys (or worse) either. Toms won the matchup easily. (I also sold number shares of Scott as, despite his three-stroke lead, the number was way to high IMO. Nice payday when he dropped to seventh.)

The other matchup was Austin over Gay. This time paying -132 but getting a half stroke. Just looking at the previous three rounds showed Austin was in a groove. He just wasn't getting any bogeys -- just two in his previous two rounds. Gay was getting numerous birdies, putting him high on the leaderboard, but he was getting almost as many bogeysl. It looked like a mismatch, and it turned out to be so...

I am not saying this to brag (much)...I just would like to get more golf betting discussions because the opportunities are out there. I don't know if there are any other pga bettors on the forum (other than kalmikrazy) but if so...start posting. If you aren't betting the PGA, then you could be missing some great opportunities. Over the past months, I've learned to spot bad lines and great opportunities. I am not always right, obviously, but I've only lost money in one of the last nine tournaments when I started betting golf seriously. I have completely abandoned baseball (too brutal) to focus on golf and it's been paying off. Join the fun!

First off good going, most people do not even watch golf as the ratings are getting lower and lower now if you break it down even further very very few bet it even though lines offered asll the time. Golf betting is more popular in Europe for some reason. I think you really need to fllow it to have a chance and watch lots of it on the golf channel.

I agree being a fan helps and watching a lot of golf helps. But I also use Tourcast and you can see where every player hit his shot. Every round is archived. It was $5 a month when I signed up and well worth it... I am not sure golf ratings are down -- Sun afternoon there was golf on three of the major networks.

I've played some tournament odds before, but will have to start looking closer at head-to-heads. I'm the master of betting a player a year before his breakthrough. I bet on Zach Johnson at both the 2006 Master's and US Open at about 125 to 1, and had bet on Michael Campbell at upwards of 100 to 1 several times before he brokethrough. I've been on DiMarco for a few tournaments now and am getting off his saddle for those looking for the next major champion

So Crackerjack, Kalmikrazy and other Golf bettors - who are you thinking about backing to win the U.S. Open or win their matchups tomorrow?

I haven't looked at first round matchups yet. I like this betting option best because the matchups are based on who is teeing off together. With tournament matchups, you have to work a lot harder to find good betting opportunities because they pair two players that are fairly equal. You can still find good options, but it's more work. I do have a few tournament matchups I really like.

Rod Pampling (-140) over Ian Poulter (price a little steep, but Pampling is the better golfer)
Ernie Els (even) over Adam Scott (very small play on Els based on experience and watching Scott choke shows he's going to have trouble closing it out. That triple bogey costing him a chance to win could still be playing in his head...)

My favorite play though is Vijay Singh (-125) over Retief Goosen. Goosen has played fairly well this season but he's still being carried by his second place finish at the Masters in oddsmakers minds. Singh has played consistent all season. He hasn't missed a cut in 15 tournaments and won twice. I think he has a chance at playing for the trophy on Sunday. I normally don't back Singh, but I think this is a really good opportunity for him.

Good luck! I'll be back with single round matchup picks throughout the Open...

Goosen is a tough usa open player, his other tourneys really do not matter, he hits it straight and VJ is wild and that does not work for us open courses.

After first round it looked good with VJ at +1 and Goosen at +6. VJ had a crap second round, but so have a lot of folks. Goosen will be lucky to be +1 (only three under par rounds in 1.5 rounds). I still feel like that bet will win. I need it to win, as this was my biggest bet so far in the tournament.

Unless Els has a complete breakdown, I should cash that one. Scott finished first two rounds at +18.

Pampling loss was tough, but it was for a fraction of a unit because of the price.

Goosen is already at +2 after just three holes. He'd have to play perfectly here out...I know it could happen but I still like my chances on this one
