For those w/ a Casino Host..

This is my first year with a casino host and she has been very good to me, how many of you guys who have one tip or buy them gifts of appreciation and if so how many times a year?

I never have. I didn't even think of it. Are players supposed to tip their hosts?

There's really no need for that.

Your host is making making plenty of money off you as it is.

IT all depends. Once you have a number of hosts you'll realize when one is going out of his way for you...

If 90% of places give you dinner and one place flies you in, puts you in free tournies, etc etc, a bottle of wine or dinner gift certificate at the holidays goes a long way.

I've had about 20 hosts and have sent gifts to two - one at Atlantis and one at Mandalay Bay.

Right. I certainly didn't mean to imply that you should never gift a casino host, but rather that you should realize that she's already being extremely well compensated for her work. Maybe a gift for the holidays or her birthday would be appropriate (as you might give any friend or business associate), especially if she's been particularly accommodating.

In other words, show gratitude if appropriate, but never feel the least bit obligated to tip.

If you would get the same from any host (You don't ever remember your hosts name, you check in with whoever, you call whoever) no need to tip/gift.

If your host goes out of your way for you and you always call him cause you know you'll get taken better care of, some wine or gift certificate or similar gift for his/her birthday or at the holidays is nice. I've never seen anyone actually tip cash, but I am sure it happens (Some casinos prohibit it)

I guess what I'm saying is that while you should always treat your casino host (and everyone else for that matter) with kindness and respect, the best tip you could ultimately give her would be returning to play at her casino again.

No.

Also good presents for hosts are generaric ones. Cuban cigars always goes over well. If they like golfing a new driver, if they like Oakland Raiders a signed jersey or something. If you know a host well enough to know his likes and dislikes he is prob. going out of his way for you so you show him that.

Actually I think some hosts do get a %.

LVA put out a QOD about it a few weeks ago if I recall.

I have no idea what percent they receive but it's but what I've gathered (although I could easily be wrong, mind you -- every host I've ever asked about this has been rather cagey on the subject) is that they're compensated as a percentage of theoretical loss.

A good host makes 300k+ a year. They want you to feel good about being a chump. I don't feel compelled to tip good hosts, but I am more likely to stay at their hotels.
