With the passing of Jerry Buss, who are the greatest sports owners of all-time?

Try to put personal hatred to the side for a second

And it is tough. Real tough to figure out who would be in your Top 3.

    Buss is obviously under consideration.

    Then who?

    1. George Steinbrenner. I loathe the Yankees, but man. He bought the Yanks for 6 million, and they are now worth 1.2 Billion. Not a bad investment. 7 World Series titles.

    2. Lamar Hunt. Owner, KC Chiefs. Man, this guy was a visionary. He founded the AFL, and then merged it with the NFL, and was responsible for creating the Super Bowl. Hunt was also founded the North American Soccerl League--which became MLS, was one of the original investors of the Chicago Bulls, and created the World Championship Tennis, which ushered in the Open Tennis Era in the 1960's. He is in 3 pro sports Halls of Fame, Football, Tennis, and Soccer.

    3. Conn Smythe. They won something like 6 Cups in 9 years. 'Nuff said.

    4. George Halas. Founded that little thing called the NFL-- with his Chicago Bears.

    5. The Mara Family.

    6. The Rooney Family.

    7. Al Davis. The 1960's and 1970's Al Davis. Not the crazy one who hired 12 year old-Lane Kiffin.

    8. Jack Kent Cooke.

    9. Walter Brown, the Founder of the Boston Celtics and the man behind Red Auerbach's curtain.

    10. Branch Rickey.

Tough to name 1, 2 or 3. All pretty solid.

    Peter Pocklington

Pocklington parlayed the Gretzky signing into a merger between the WHA and the National Hockey League. Edmonton had its NHL franchise. Five years later, the Oilers would win their first of five Stanley Cup championships they'd capture under Pocklington's ownership.

    Buss > Steinbrenner

    10 Championships > 7 Championships

    Loved by fans/players > loved/hated by fans/players

Buss was raised by a single mom.....who was a waitress. As a child, Buss stood in bread lines. Dirt poor. The Lakers were recently valued at 1 billion dollars.

Steinbrenner came from money. His father was a wealthy shipping magnate. George was a "silver spoon" kid.

Paul Brown was probably the best. Owner of Cleveland Brown & Coach. Put together Otto Graham, Marion Motley, Dante Lavelli, Special Delivery Jones, Lou (the toe) Groza as leaders of the best team ever assembled.

How about Connie Mack. Owner & Manager of the Philadelphia Athletics for over 50 years. Had his ups & downs mainly because of money problems, but bought together 2 of the greatest champion ship contingents of all times. 1910-1914
lead buy the 100,000 infield. The 1929-1931 teams may have had the greatest team ever assembled, one of only 2 teams to win 100 games in a row 3 straight seasons. Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane, Lefty Grove & George Earnshaw
broke up the Yankee Dominance and shattered records until the Depression forced him selling them all.

You need to stop backing everything Laker related because you're making yourself look like a retard for several reasons:

    1) What the fukk does being liked, their childhood, or the way they were raised have anything to do with the argument?
    2) Buss also owned the Los Angeles Kings, and how many championships did they win during his tenure? 0. Steinbrenner also owned an American Basketball League team for only a few years (the league was disassembled for obvious reasons) and won a championship in an entirely different sport than what he is known for.
    3) The Yankees are worth more than the Lakers according to Forbes, so that makes your other statement irrelevant.

Steinbrenner was the best by far. He wanted to win more than anybody and was willing to spend whatever it took. To see his greedy kids gut that team and put a limit on spending as they have done must be making George roll over in his grave.

Not to mention Steinbrenner took over a franchise that was the face of MLB (the Yankees) that was in the toilet at the time, and was the laughing stock of the game, and returned it to relevance and beyond. He bought the team for a song, and turned it into a multi billion dollar empire, proving that George wasn't just a great owner, but a great businessman, unlike clowns like Angelos and a few others.

Love the Yankees, or hate the Yankees, when his NYY teams came to your city for a three game set, your teams attendance spiked from 19,000 a game to 28,000 a game +

Please elaborate on the "backing everything Laker related". I'm definitely in the "Buss is the greatest owner in sports" camp (which is true)......and I made a thread about Kobe making Lebron his bitch in crunch-time last night (which is also true). Nowhere will you find any claims of Lakers greatness in 2013 from me. No claims about Lakers making the playoffs and then making a run. Nothing of the sort. So, again.....please elaborate.

Let me bottom line this for you kiddo........

Buss 10 titles in 33 years (16 finals appearances
Steinbrenner 7 titles in 37 years (11 WS appearances)

Steinbrenner had much deeper pockets than Dr. Buss, but..........was far less effective.

    Buss > Steinbrenner = fact

Steve..........the above is true. But, let's not forget that the year prior to Buss purchasing the Lakers the NBA finals were TAPE DELAYED! Fans had to stay up to the wee hours of the night to watch the NBA finals! The Lakers "Showtime" era (combined with the Magic/Bird component) changed that.
