I was just thinking this past thanksgiving that it would be so cool if to hear him do one more game. RIP to a legend.

#38Agreed Madden and Summerall were the best to ever call football games imo. If your team was playing and they were calling the game it meant the game was the best game of the week and since I always watched 49er games as a kid I got to listen to Madden and Summerall a lot.
Die hard loyal Gee-Man guy here.
About an hour ago I remembered one of my favorite calls of all time.
1990 NFC Championship game.
Bahr kicks the gamer to make the final 15-13 NYG over SF.
Summerall (with Madden next to him) says...
"There will be no three-peat"

#43John Madden + Pete Rozell + the city of Green Bay (everyone like an underdog) are why the NFL became the most powerful business in the world.
He'll get no credit for it either.

#44Madden was a natural in the booth from the start. The funniest of all time.
My favorite crack of his was when he would see a player's helmet on the field he would always say you always check to see if the head was still in it.Comment -

#46Incredible talent. Loved the guy. I think we all kinda grew up with him. His love as a coach and video “tella straightor”descriptions of the game made them all the more entertaining.
One of a kind and like Dane said, a true Legend.
Rest in peace John Madden and thanks. ☮️Comment -

#55GOAT
When I was a kid, six years old no more than eight, Madden and Summerall got me hooked on NFL for life.
I vaguely remember Brookshire, but those two voices are indelibly etched in my brain.
Just read where the EA Madden Sports empire is worth over 4.5 BILLION dollars.
Three characters put FOX on the map.
Al Bundy, Homer Simpson, and John Madden.
RIP Coach, and thanks for everything.
85 years, a terrific family man by all accounts, yeah, that's a charmed life.

#56I remember watching him in the 70's back when the Raiders were good every year. He would pace the sidelines always waving his arms and complaining to the official.
Then a couple of years after he retired from coaching he started the tele-straitor or the football equivalent to an etch a sketch. Also loved how when you saw him in the booth holding the microphone, he always had a monster death grip on the thing.
It's a sad thing to see him pass. I hope he makes the cover of his own game next year or maybe a special release later like before the Super Bowl.Comment -

#58A legend for sure as so many of us have stated.
He put excitement in the booth because of his TRUE LOVE for football.
Great to watch ...hard to find someone who didn't like him.
As his time was running out he left the Game he loved to spend more time with family
God Bless You John
We Need more people like you

#59I've been watching the tributes fly in for the last hour or so.
I'm going to divert my attention elsewhere, not out of disrespect, but now all the accolades are becoming redundant is the point I'm trying to make here.
Two things stick out.
When the GOAT of baseball (Vin Scully) tweets this morning thanking the GOAT of football (John Madden) for showing him the ropes about calling a football game, well, it really doesn't get much better than that.
The other:
That was a very classy tweet Lebron James sent out about Madden, reminding me why I tolerate James.
He does have redeeming qualities, and has a classy, respectful side to him.
All the other accolades from like the Manning's, Deion, etc. they're all touching and respectful etc. however it's becoming like a run on sentence now.Comment -
