#39Streets of Philadelphia got to 9 on the charts, and it was a pretty big song at the time. I think it won the Oscar for best song in a movie. And it’s crazy to think there was a time where MTV actually had music by adults in their daily rotation.
But I agree with Arch on the overall point about hits. Such a pointless way to judge music, or anything really. If the metric is the more people who consume it, it must be good, then count me out. People are idiots. You can tell by reading this thread. Bruce Springsteen is one of the most revered songwriters of all time and one of the most well known American artists of all time yet everyone is acting like he’s just yesterdays trash or they’re like “never heard of him” I mean Jesus Christ can no one see beyond their own nose? I don’t wake up every morning and fire up the Springsteen but my god I at least understand his contribution to music. Also it was only like 10 years ago he did the damn super bowl halftime. “Never heard of him, he didn’t have hits, good thing he cashed in” you guys are embarrassing yourselves.Comment -

#42that ain't no hit
guy never had a no 1 song. He was good for little niche of an audience but he wasn't geared towards creating mainstream hits. did amazingly well making music that he really believed in.
I heard he was/is amazing in concert. never saw him.
I liked his album that had songs surrounding 9-11. can't remember the names of any of the songs right now... that kind of sums up his music

#44I'm on fire was probably my favorite song by Bruce back in the day.
I've met Bruce in real life and he seemed cool to me even though he's a frigg'n full blown liberal fool.
He worked out at the same gym (Hollywood Gym) I did probably 20 years ago and I'd see him almost daily as we'd hit the gym at the same times in the morning. He liked to lift weights that's for sure. Short little guy though, quiet type in real life.

Actually he did, but not his recording. He wrote and recorded "Blinded by the Light" (his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park). Manfred Mann's cover hit number 1 four years later.
That said, not my type of music but he earned his niche, good for him. I would think The Beatles catalogue would be worth a lot more.Comment -
