Bottom line, whoever did not want confrontation to escalate should have been first to sit down and shut up - anyone who did not back down is asking for things to escalate and to fight as well.

Since it's clear nobody backed down, fighting is consented to by all involved - and everyone has right to stand their ground and defend themselves.

When anyone has had enough and backs down or gets knocked down and doesn't get back up - any further aggression is no longer necessary, and so when when attacking anyone who is down or clearly passive is bullying and no longer self defence.

In this case it doesn't matter what the argument is about nor who's argument is right or wrong - the setting they are in is not a court room or debating contest, there are no mutually agreed upon rules of engagement.

So fighting reasonably continued until the white couple finally gave up because they couldn't take the beating - the black guy didn't continue beating them when they stopped fighting back, so nothing wrong at all with what happened, the white couple should have just stayed seated and shut their mouths if they wanted to avoid escalating things.

The black guy stood up and turned towards them obviously to escalate the situation, which the white couple did not have to escalate as well by standing up as well - but they chose to stay standing up which means they chose to not back down from the fight offered by the black guy.

Or it was the whites that escalated first and wouldn't back down causing the black guy to decide not to back down either by standing up to turn towards them - either way it doesn't matter because it's clear that nobody was willing to back down until somebody gets punched in the face, that's the reality of life.
