LOL true. I believe he could have stepped on the base at any time and the run doesn't count even if the runner reached home first. Still, it's incredible and hilarious. I've watched it 10 times and I might watch it 100 more. That's gotta be the play of the year.

Can't even chalk it up to a brain fart or situational awareness.

Unless that guy is not the starting first baseman, or a first baseman at all, you can reach no other conclusion.

There would never, ever, ever ever ever, be an instance where a 1st baseman would be chasing a runner back towards home.

Never in practice, never in a fluke situtaion, not ever.

So it takes quite a bit for a practiced player at that level to do something so awkward as to do what he did.

I would go so far as to say it was pre planned by the players.

A routine hopper to third, standard toss out to first.

Only the first baseman never even takes the bag into consideration.

Some people see a last second half court pass and shot and think it was so amazing, they would never practice that.

But they do practice unusual plays and endgame scenarios like that.

But in what odd scenario is there ever a situation where the first baseman would do that?

I don't mind the fix and intentional runs, but at least be more professional about it.

Miss or drop the ball and let the guy get safe.

Don't take the ball and just stare at everyone.

It's called a brain fart. He was pulled off the base with the runner headed toward him and figured he'd just tag him and that's that. It's happened before and most players just give up. I think he was then so flustered by what Baez was doing that he just sort of froze and panicked. Not trying to excuse his stupidity, but that's what happened. It wasn't preplanned or whatever, come on man. This dude's never gonna live that down, you think he wanted that? Of course not. Not the first or last time a player will do something inexplicably stupid in the heat of the moment.

It was the 14th game of his MLB career. He's a kid and was more of a 3B by trade. It might have been the fartiest brain fart in history, but it was a brain fart.
