Hazeltine greens became an unbeatable carnival game of chance, not skill.
Beautiful course but it's always had a whammy attached to it when it's in the national spotlight like it's cursed where off the wall things happen.Even lightning strike kills at major tournaments.Back right after it opened in 70 they held the PGA championship there and a couple golfers like Orville Moody really badmouthed it and there was hell to pay at the time.I wouldn't blame Tiger Woods for doing the same thing. You can curse the weather in Minnesota because it will always do a number on you but the greens at this place are just funky. There aren't exagerated breaks and slopes that you can see, there are subtle little channels you can't see. These greens were designed by guys running the softball in the milk can, basketball hoop, shoot the star out with the gun and shoot the cork out of the crooked barrel games at the carnival. The ball is almost as big as the cylinder type games where you need an exact strike..It turned the whole tournament into dumb luck and a game of chance.Anyone feel the same way?

    I couldn't disagree with you more..............sorry.

Tiger simply got outplayed by some tremendous shot making by the winner..........Tiger missed greens, as well as putts.

Fish,I guess I'm biased about thinking things in Minnesota are funky because I live here.hehe! The baggy joke in the metrodome, the balls getting stuck in the roof, the roof deflating,Morton Andersen missing a chip shot after being perfect all year making the Vikes missout on the super bowl,etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.Jesse Ventura winning the governorship.Al Franken becoming a senator,,,I'm in a hurry but the list is 50 miles long of freakishness. The Yankees calling everyone off the metrodome field because it was unplayable where they couldn't see the ball in the white roof.Billy Martin managed here and ended up beating up a marshmellow salesman when he came back as manager of the Yankees.

Remember the tv show Green Acres and how Eddy Albert did everything by the book and was looked upon as unorthodox by the off the wall rural hicks???That's Minnesota in a nutshell.

I am certain that Minnesota sports teams gravitate to hiring the most outrageous repuatation players in the history of sports. There is a list a mile long. You had the worst trade in history with Hershel Walker. He lived across from my cousin that's a gyno doctor and Walker tried gassing himself in his car in the garage. Then you had Moss hitting a traffic cop and driving her around on the hood of his car.Latreen Sprewell was here.Lou Holtz scam debacle,Clem Haskins scam debacle.JR Ryder,Mitch Lee,scandal after scandal after scandal.Buster Rhymes the running back under Switzer at Oklahoma was here.He used to bring a machine gun to practice in his locker there. He's way in his 40's now and still lives in Minnesota. Was driving dump truck for a construction company recently and tried running over his foreman. In jail now.He was so nasty that a rapper took his name.

More Minnesota quirks, only state besides Mass that voted for Dukakis. We voted for ** Govern and were the only state? We ran Mondale for president.I was standing on the finish line at Canterbury for the biggest horse race in Minnesota history.Lots of mortal lock Kentucky derby studs in the field with top jockeys like Gary Stevens riding and a way over 100-1 shot named Cheapskate beat Broad Brush by a nose.

Expect the unexpected in Minnesota.Rich Beem won the last championship over Woods and knew Hazeltine because he managed-club pro at a mini putt-par 3-driving range right out of Caddy Shack in Sioux Falls. He got to play Hazeltine when his wife wanted to go shopping at the mega mall all the time.

Right after Green Acres was done airing in the early 70's me and my parents when I was a kid stayed in a twin cities hotel.Eddy Albert is from Minneapolis and was making a movie and staying in the hotel.Got to ride up in the elevator with him and he was absolutely a cranky old man just like in Green Acres.Hockey tournaments were going on and the hotel was full of kids.About 20 cheerleader types were singing the Green Acres theme on his floor and he was pissed.

Fish, you are from Louisiana aren't you?????It's funny because the river seems to connect alot of off the wall funky states.Arkansas and Louisiana to name a couple more.

Pitchers Jack Morris and Bert Blyleven and catcher Steinbach all have Minnesota roots along with Paul Mollitor and Dave Winfield and they said that the new Twins stadium was ill constructed where homers are going to be flying out like mad.It was one of those quickly put together dealies where they signed a tax increase and got urban renewal money and put it in the area of town no private enterprise would have dreamed of putting it.Very impractical area with no parking, bad hoods, congestion and the place is going to be a band box.Maybe they can get the little league world series away from Williamsport to play there.

Geoff Ogilvy just mouthed off on ESPN about the greens and mostly the setup with the rough and traps around the greens and he's catching hell for it.He said next year that the majors will be played at real courses.

Na,it's a nice course and everyone did play the same course but it was a bad layout around the greens. Some guys were rewarded more for lousy shots than guys that nailed a hole.

I thought I detected marks on the greens from windmills and clown faces.I think I saw them behind a few pine trees in temporary storage until the tourney ended.

Geesh, everone here is so serious where they don't see that I take a grain of truth and run with it.My fun jab was to say that it's wise to fade any event that takes place in Minnesota from going off smoothly.Nothing predictable or sensible ever goes on here.Wise to go with longshots here.Always wrenches and bugaboos thrown into the mix.One year ago thay had the republican convention here and look who was nominated,** Cain.Maybe if someone better had been nominated they could have stopped Obama from becoming a dictator.

Fishhead, what part of Iowa are you from, around Mason City?I know Iowa really good,my ex was from Ames.Ever play poker at Tama which was about the first poker room in the midwest back a few years ago?Lots of gambling in Iowa these days and it's strange because they used to be a really controlled state.Prairie Meadows, the dog tracks in Dubuque and Council Bluffs with casinos.Hell, the red barn wayside on I-35 as soon as you cross the border has a casino now.All those farmers with 4 mail boxes collecting subsidies have bucks to burn.hehe!I had to shut up and not joke around with the family I married into because they took that stuff seriously.Iowa people tend to take more pride and are more serious about standing up for their state where if I hear someone from Iowa tell a Minnesota joke,I add to it.

What's with Auburn wanting Iowa State's Chizik as a coach???Bewilders me how he could be in demand? Those Ames people defend and tollerate Iowa State football and get ticked off at jokes directed their way.A funny sort in Ames.hehe!Lots of scandals in Ames too where nothing ever goes right.Basketball coach fraud.etc.Minnesota must be close enough where the jinx rubs off on them.

Poa Annua greens will be ripped out next year

The greens at Hazeltine were awful, and they will be replaced in 2010 or so.
The puts were jumping everywhere. I watched two puts over the same piece of ground, one broke right the other broke left. It was a carnival. Check out some other posts.

"...the more I watched the more it become clear that those greens were what we here in the UK would call 'ropey', particularly in the afternoon. As proved to be the case, Woods couldn;t find a putt on Sunday, not because he choked but because of the grass on the greens. I am no expert but, according to a source on the web who know his grass "The poa in the greens in a major is a disgrace. Augusta got rid of it many yrs ago. They intend to change the greens for the 2016 Ryder Cup(years too late). To have one of the best fields of the yr(save the 20 club pros-no offense) look like dummies IS an offense to the best in golf.It should NEVER have happened. Poa makes putting on those greens not much better than a half-decent local muni when it rears its ugly 'head(s)' and royally screws up professional putting at the highest level.I've not seen in virtually every major I've watched, such terrible putting conditions and I've watched quite a number. The reason Tiger shot decent on the Thurs was the poa being very 'short' early in the day.He putted much worse on the Fri afternoon, as he did on the weekend. We saw so many of the others simply fall off the world with those greens, but we got to see a lot of Tiger for obvious reasons and he reads putts so well that he trusts his read and when the poa is 'up', he's screwed. It was survival out there and ONE guy got lucky against him" So maybe the question is, particularly in light of the fact that hazeltine are digging up all their greens next year and replacing them with a different grass - should the PGA even have been played there? The pros have kept quiet about the greens but i wonder how many secretly subscribe to the view that POA grass is more suited to the local park course than a major?"

I think Yang played way over his head and some of his shots at end of final round were miracles and one wrong bounce and Tiger would of won. It was a fluke like it usual is when you beat Tiger.

Tiger had to miss like 20 10 fters the last two days by a hair.
