Did Bob Baffert Drug His Horses Yesterday?
    I’m thinking

Bob had 2 horses in the derby yesterday. The first horse goes nuts in the paddock and flips over. In the process, breaks the arm of Bob’s main assistant.

Authentic wins the race and in the winners circle, also goes nuts and ends up trampling Bob, knocking him over, knocking off his glasses, and ripping his suit. It was actually pretty funny (since nobody got seriously hurt).

Am I the only one that thinks something stinks?

Why is it only HIS two horses lost complete control? These are supposed to be well trained and behaved horses.

Bob has a history of drugging horses.

          Its plausible.

I'm not saying I think he did it.

I noticed Tizthelaw was jerking his head towards the stands.
The jockey had to pull him straight to keep from drifting.
Also,(I forget which horse it was, but it was the 2hole horse) he bumped another horse.

Authentic had a clean trip. Gate to wire.

But, if next week, for example, the stud comes up dirty, no one will be shocked, including me.

The horses are acting up because of no fans. They have feelings. Imagine being a horse and winning the Derby and you see no fans cheering after the win. It will break your heart.

horses are also like cats get spooked very easy. Authentic ran his race got left alone got brave on lead in a very mediocre derby cast

Racehorses are well trained but not necessarily well behaved, which is why most of the male horses are geldings.

Authentic's speed figures weren't that far behind those of Tiz the Law and he was improving every race; he also was aided by a speed bias. Tagg and Franco amateurs? You need to wake up.

IMO, no he didn’t. Tiz the Law has stalked slow fractions in all of his wins. The pace yesterday wasn’t blistering by any means, but was still much faster than any pace the Law has ever stalked. He simply didn’t have enough in the tank after running faster to keep up his stalking position. Authentic was the better horse and Baffert deserves credit for having him ready.

I think by now, anyone that has read my thread in the horse racing forum knows I am not a big fan of the trainer of Thousand Words. So with that said, I wanted to try and explain what I saw with the paddock incident that led to the horse flipping.

First of all, the horse did not seem to hurt himself at all but with today's protocol in place, he had to be scratched. That protocol is in place for all the right reasons . I wish it was when I trained.

That said, I have seen the "all juiced up" stuff and while I will never defend this trainer, the reason the horse flipped was very apparent to me and it had nothing to do with drugs.

When you put on the first of two girths for a race it is much different than the girth horses train in everyday. It has elastic all through it and if not put on correctly, can tighten unevenly on a horse and cause them to do one of two things. They will , what is called " freeze", or they will flip. They had attempted to do the correct thing by saddling him while walking. You do that because a horse cannot flip if they are walking. They must be standing still to flip. But saddling on the walk didn't work and the tape starts too late so I cannot see exactly why although I have my suspicions. So, they saddled him standing still.

When the valet who is the person that helps the trainer saddle the horse goes to stretch his side of the girth, he simply does not do a good job at all IMO. He stretched it about 6 inches. That is obvious when watching the video. You are supposed to stretch that girth at least a foot or a foot and a half or even closer to two feet. So when the asst. trainer goes to stretch his side to buckle it up, he has very little girth to play with. ( You cannot stretch the girth on the other side of the horse, each individual can only stretch their side of the girth.) With very little girth to play with he uses the strap on the saddle it will attach to, to help gain the strength/leverage to finish stretching so as to attach the girth to the saddle strap.

As a side note, the asst. trainer did absolutely nothing wrong IMO. So when the girth is not stretched properly, the horse who was flustered from the crowd of people behind him, which is fairly common, the horse goes up. His right hind leg is already bent probably from the uneven feeling of half of the girth that was already put on, which weakens that back end strength to hold the front weight if they go up, so the horse goes over. Notice if you watch the video, it is the right hind leg that was bent. That is the same side the girth was already on. That being the valets side.

As an older guy these days, I truly feel bad for the valet who was older. I am sure he was worried about having to saddle that horse once the process started. And, trying to saddle a horse on the walk, when you are older, takes fitness which older people have less of, even though we would never admit it. So the guy was probably somewhat tired, obviously worried about dealing with a horse he knows could hurt him, and did not bend down far enough or at all to stretch his side of the girth as far as he would have liked to in hindsight.

As I said in the beginning, I make no excuses for that trainer and have no idea what he was treated with pre race.

All I know is it was the girth not put on properly that caused that horse to go up.

Hope that helps to better understand what took place.
