From the NY Post: (Tony Gwynn was AWESOME) and other tidpits!
Saw this in the NY Post. Several interesting bits of information here, but the one that stands out to me is that Tony Gwynn averaged 29 strikeouts PER SEASON!!!

Kobe slur at ref didn’t get the Thom treatment

    • New York Post
    • 23 Aug 2020

SO AFTER 25 years of honorable service to Fox Sports, Thom
Brennaman has been past-tensed for one off-air, live-microphone slip — a slur word for homosexuals. Inexcusable yet forgivable, no?
Compare that to Kobe Bryant, who in 2011 directed a loud, oncourt homophobic slur toward a black NBA ref. Bryant was fined by the league but never lost a day of Lakers’ pay or play. The NBA, fans and media quickly forgave him — if they even cared — and his multimillion dollar benefactors at socially conscious Nike played dumb.
And within the thousands of public tributes issued following Bryant’s tragic death, fewer than few noted that episode. No one onair with Fox mentioned it.
Bryant and Brennaman apologized, but only one was forgiven — and so quickly it became quickly forgotten.
➤ Stats? You like stats? Try these: Reader Richard T. Monahan notes Tony Gwynn averaged 29 strikeouts per season, and current No. 1 superstar Mike Trout averages 152 per.
Thursday, in 14 innings — two seven-inning games — the Phillies struck out 20 times against nine Blue Jays pitchers.
Jonathan Villar, this year employed by the Marlins as their leadoff batter — he has thus far struck out three times in each of two games — last year struck out 176 times in 162 games for the Orioles as their leadoff man. Last week, in the game in which

DJ LeMahieu was hurt, he made an out, leading ESPN to reduce the Yankees’ “win probability” from 73.7 percent to 71.7 percent. Nurse!

I knew he was a great hitter and IMO highly underrated even for a perennial All-Star but had no idea he was THAT good..

he was a super nice guy as well. i used to go down to the stadium to get autographs as a kid once in a while. the pads were in town and he came through the main visitor area (instead of sneaking in.) he had us all get in an orderly line and made sure to give everyone a signature. probably been close to 30 years, but i think i still have it somewhere on an index card.

Maybe the best hitter of all time; he's No. 1 in lifetime BA among players who played after 1960 and I don't think it's close.

If he had more power no doubt would go down as the best hitter of all time. I just think lack of power cost him that title but he was awesome!

A great batsman for sure but not the best of all time. Slugging and obp are surpassed by others including Boggs. From 82-91 there was noone better than Boggs.

91-00 Gwynn was still a phenomenal player, but different batters of that era. I'd take Puckett 91-95 and Garciaparra 96-00.

But a wonderful batsman, tough out, great player. Just need more slugging.

Boggs for sure during the 80's but career-wise, I'd give it to Gwynn. Given that his body type didn't change at all during the 90's, you have to wonder what he would have done if he had juiced up along with everybody else.

I grew up watching two of the greatest machines of my lifetime.

                          Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn.
Look at the OBA's Boggs had his first seven years.
                          Look at Gwynn's batting averages.

                          They were both not human.
