Why don’t they use colored clothes so we know who’s who?
Better question is why am I betting on this?

Until about 1996, most of the U.S. race tracks did not use colored saddle towels consistently. Tracks that raced at night , in my case, Charlestown and Penn National did use colored saddle towels in the 70's and I think earlier than that in C.T.'s case.
Some tracks, Bowie for sure, played with things like white saddle towels with black numbers but they reverted back to the black towel with white numbers shortly thereafter.
Most tracks got on the same page around the same time and coordinated the color scheme so as not to confuse the player.
I think Kona's answer about the UK using all the same color is accurate. Colors were a real big deal back in the day. The fans used to watch colors or the caps on the riders helmets to see their horses back in the day. Tradition wins out still over there I guess.
Colors had to be registered with the jockey club prior to using. Don't know if they still do or not but if they still are, no way it's as complex a task as it once was. It was a real pain in the butt.
Simulcasting no doubt had a lot to do with the colored towels.

Oh yea, I remember those days when we had no colors. I just looked for the jockey silks. I also noticed some of these tracks don’t put the horses in the gate in numerical order, making it even harder to track.

Most International tracks number by weight assignment. I remember the days when Keenland had no track announcer pre Kurt Becker

I believe some of the tracks in Asia don't allow minus pools. If too much is bet on a horse, the return will simply be $2.00; this can happen with show bets on huge favorites.

they pay 2.04 instead of the 2.10 here in states and also at times the ADW sites that take those tracks will also do the 2.04. Any time you want to be big on a favorite to show on international use the exchanges so you can lock in price
