Different Books Payout Different Amounts For The Same Bet
My nephew was in town and he wanted to put a few bucks down on a basketball game. We went to my local William Hill brick and mortar store. He bet $47 and the slip said it paid $42.70. I looked through some old bet slips I had (losers) and I had one from Stations (Red Rock) Sportsbook in Vegas and $47 paid $42.75. I checked online at Bovada and they pay $42.73. The bet calculator at Pinny said $42.72.

All these were at the same -110 odds.

Is it just the way they round the number up or down? Seems like William Hill is a ripoff.

I guess I'm late to the party since I'm just finding this out. I just always assumed they would all pay the same if the odds were the same.

Yes, a lot of books do some heavy rounding.

Most places in Las Vegas round up to the nearest nickel. A few places on The Strip will round to the nearest cent. William Hill is the only one that rounds down like that (as far as I know)

If I ran a sportsbook, I wouldn't round off at all and would use bolt cutters to give the correct fraction of a penny to every wager graded.

Wasn't crying, Coach. Just curious. But you're right, it's pennies to me. But to them - a few cents on a ton of bets adds up to a nice chunk of change.

Most bets are going to be for an amount that doesn't get rounded off e.g. $11 or $110 at -110. For ones that do get rounded off, half of them lose anyway, so there would be no difference if they rounded off or not. That leaves only a small fraction of bets where this applies. And it's only worth about one two cents each. My estimate is it's worth about $25,000 per year for their Nevada operation. With a market cap of around $2,000,000,000

I didn't think of it like that. That makes sense. Thanks. I'll get back to picking losers now.
