Female college kicker on deaths door
That first college female football player is in ICU.

I think she played at New Mexico like 2001.

She travels country claiming she was raped now by the coaches and team, and councils victims.

It seems like she might be a bit of a pill popper....

If someone can link this it's an interesting read....perhaps saloon worthy because the comments will be interesting.

Arguably one of the more pioneering student-athletes to ever step foot on the University of New Mexico campus has waged the fight of her life for the past month.
Katie Hnida, a kicker on the Lobos football team from 2002-04, has been gravely ill for several weeks after an adverse reaction to a prescribed medication sent her into multiple organ failure, according to a GoFundMe page launched by her family to help raise funds to cover rising costs of her medical care.
The goal is $12,000, although the family says her costs have already exceeded $155,000. Wednesday night, the total on the fundraising site was just over $6,100.

Her family wrote on the GoFundMe page that she was given an antibiotic but soon suffered a rare, life-threatening reaction to it. Her kidneys and liver failed and her bone marrow quit functioning, which led to extensive bleeding and discussion among her doctors that she might require a liver transplant. Hnida was admitted to an ICU and given emergency dialysis.
The family says she has stabilized but will require months of rehabilitation and recovery, plus she will not be able to work for up to six months.
Hnida, 37, played three seasons at New Mexico and became the first woman to play and score in a college football game when then-head coach Rocky Long sent her in to successfully convert two extra points in the Lobos’ win over Texas-San Marcos in the season opener on Aug. 30, 2003. That team finished 8-5 and made an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl.
One of the few remaining employees still with UNM who was part of the athletic staff when Hnida played is equipment manager Jacque May. The two roomed together during the bowl game and developed a solid relationship that continues.
“I remember the day the coaches came to us and said we had a female player transferring in,” May said. “I’ll never forget it. They told us to treat her like every other athlete, and that’s exactly what Katie wanted, to be treated the same as the players around her. She never expected anything different and not once asked for special treatment. Never.”
Hnida became a national figure after her first action with the Lobos, her blond ponytail dangling down the back of her cherry game jersey as she made college football history. She appeared on numerous talk shows and was interviewed by various publications, spending plenty of time talking about breaking down barriers in a male-dominated sport.
At UNM, May said, Hnida was given a private dressing area apart from the rest of the team, but otherwise did everything else with the other players.
“I’ve been around a long time and I can tell you, she was a wonderful teammate,” May said. “Rocky and all the coaches, they were great with her because the one thing Rocky did was reward players who worked their butts off. Katie definitely worked her butt off. She knew everyone was watching her.”
Hnida went on to become a leading spokeswoman for victims of rape and domestic violence. She occasionally returns to UNM and the still has photos of her in her Lobos playing days serving as the backdrop to her Twitter account that has over 4,200 followers.

A star athlete in high school in Colorado, she started her college career as a kicker at the University of Colorado and played one season as the first female player in Buffaloes history. She never appeared in a game and transferred to UNM after her freshman year.
It was during her time at Colorado that she was sexually assaulted by one of her teammates, although she never pressed charges. The story didn’t become public until 2004 when Colorado was embroiled in a scandal as allegations surfaced that the team used sex and alcohol to entice recruits.
Then-Colorado coach Gary Barnett was admonished for disparaging comments he made about Hnida, saying, “It was obvious Katie was not very good. She was awful. Katie was not only a girl, she was terrible, OK? There’s no other way to say it.”
Hnida has since become an author and an advocate for victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence. Until she fell ill, she was making speaking engagements around the country.

The whole Go Fund Me thing is so sketchy.... I think for every person who really needs help there are a bunch just trying to scam people. Plus the "service" takes a HUGE chunk of the money raised. It's too bad these days that you just can't trust anyone. Like these fools standing beside the road with signs saying they are stranded and need gas money. It's amazing their cars always break down and they happen to have a piece of poster board and pens with them.

I feel bad for this lady if she really is sick and needs our help.

yeah, the whole "go fund me" thing seems sketchy to me...... i would much rather see an authority figure (like a church minister) raise the money on her behalf. the "antibiotic reaction" story sounds kinda vague to me.

i'm also very leery of people who make their living going around talking about non-remarkable life experiences and/or achievements. i know a few myself........... people who talk about remarkable life experiences are fine and generally in huge demand.

just to be clear, she was at colorado for one year where alleged bad conduct occurred..... then 3 years at new mexico where no problems are alleged.

The service "takes" nothing. They ask for a donation to support them but you can choose zero.

They do it well and don't take advantage imho.

they were making money that's how it used to be in 2016 they changed there business model and donations overseas are still charged the 5 pct fee

Back in November, the site announced it would no longer take a 5 percent fee of funds raised on personal campaigns in the U.S., opting instead for what amounts to a virtual tip jar. That model has since expanded to Canada and the U.K.
"My board of directors thought I was nuts when I wanted to change the model, but we listened to our customers, we listened to the market and that was the right way to go," Solomon told CNBC's Jon Fortt for the Fortt Knox podcast.

GoFundMe is now funded largely by donations — users are presented with a voluntary option at the end of a transaction to send a few extra dollars to the site. The site's fee structure still indicates a 5 percent fee on "certified charity campaigns, and all campaigns created outside the United States and Canada."
Solomon said the "effective rate" of user donations is enough to keep the business profitable.
"A lot of feedback over the years has been, we love GoFundMe, we love what you do, the 5 percent is fair, but we want all of the money to go to the cause," he said.
"And in hearing about that, we decided that there's such good sentiment around GoFundMe the brand that we could remove the platform fee, and rely on the generosity of our donor community," Solomon added.
Since its launch in 2010, GoFundMe has shepherded more than $5 billion to local and national causes. Single campaigns, like the recent fund for the March for Our Lives organized by survivors of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting, have alone raised several million dollars.
Solomon said the sheer volume of donations allows GoFundMe to perfect its own fundraising efforts.
"Since we've launched, we've had hundreds of millions, close to a billion dollars, flow through the platform," he said. "And you understand the patterns pretty quickly. And you know the magic of the Internet is that you get to test different ways to present information."
The site is also building out donation software to eventually license to nonprofits, Solomon said.

                                  before making the change
Does GoFund Me get a cut?

Yes. GoFundMe is a for-profit company. It takes 5 percent of donations raised on its platform. There is also a 2.9 percent payment-processing fee collected on each donation, along with 30 cents for every donation. That means if a campaign raised $1,000 through 10 donations of $100 each, GoFundMe would collect about $82.

                                  So, GoFundMe profits from tragedies?

Yes. Its business model is built on the number of donations it processes. In 2016, the company projected revenues of $100 million. The company was valued at $600 million in 2015, according to Forbes.

How much has it made on the Texas shooting?

The money is still being collected. But eight days after the shooting, GoFundMe had netted about $124,180 based on its fee structure. So far, $1.4 million has been donated from 21,529 individual contributions.

This Go Fund Me is getting ridiculous. Her dad is a FAMILY PHYSICIAN! This Fund Me crap just has to stop. Some are legit, but a majority are just eye rollers. I also noticed her initial goal was $25,000. When that was reached, she re-upped it to $47,500. Now that that goal was reached I'm guessing she will shoot for 75k. She also stated she has health insurance. I would love to know which one.

I didn't realize that. Only knew how it worked due to Bigday campaign.

And the way it works now is fine. (I'm overseas and was not charged 5% or a card processing fee btw)

I don't think it's fair to have a go at them for profiting from tragedy either. They came up with the idea and provided the platform that worked. People with good ideas deserve to earn something from them. And this idea has helped a lot more people than it has hurt I'd wager.

Some are legit, but a majority are just eye rollers. I also noticed her initial goal was $25,000. When that was reached, she re-upped it to $47,500. Now that that goal was reached I'm guessing she will shoot for 75k. She also stated she has health insurance. I would love to know which one.

Truth is though people give money thinking it is all going to the people in need,no one tells them Go Fund Me gets a nice chunk of it.

Well i guess it depends on the insurance. Most companies will do everything they can to not pay a claim.
