Rae Carruth released from prison 17 years after conviction in murder of son's mother

In 2001, Rae Carruth went to prison, convicted for conspiracy to murder his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams.



Monday he walked free, having completed his sentence. At 8:02 a.m. ET, Carruth, the former Carolina Panthers wide receiver, walked out of Sampson Correctional Institution, got in a white Chevy Tahoe and drove away without speaking to an assembly of reporters outside the facility.



“I’m excited about just being out of here. I’m nervous just about how I’ll be received by the public,” Carruth said in a phone interview with WSOC-TV on Sunday. “I still have to work. I still have to live. I have to exist out there and it just seems like there is so much hate and negativity toward me. I’m actually somewhat frightened.”



Whether he will seek a relationship with his son, who was born with brain damage after being removed from his dying mother’s womb, is unclear.

I saw a lot of the trial and I still do not know if he hired the 2 guys to kill her. It made no sense and why would he go to the hospital to see her? Also, when a guy tries to flee, in many cases it's because he's actually innocent. Maybe it will all come out one day but the big boy who accused him had zero credibility.

This guy murdered his pregnant girl friend, the baby survived and is 19 years old and suffers from brain damage and other diseases directly related as a result of the mothers murder and premature forced birth..

That would be justice.. That dead girl isn't coming back, the kid is focked up too.. Why should Carruth get a reset and restart in life? Justice not served.. Should have gotten life without parole if you ask me.

you saw a lot of the trail ? well did you see the part that he had other babies mamas out west getting some of his nfl check$ and he didnt want her to get any because to him she was just east coast putz , and the part that he was driving a car in front of her- stoped so van bert could shoot her then boy rae drove off . but hey thats thug love right

I saw all the documentaries and shows covering this case over the years.. Yes he's guilty as charged.. 12 juror's found him guilty also after hearing all the facts..

He knocked up his girl and didn't want her to have the baby and pay the child support.. She saw the meal ticket and was gonna have that baby.. He couldn't take it and hired a couple thugs to take her out and the baby.. He was even involved in the final act... Was this dead chick a groupie and after the money? Probably.. Still you don't kill her and your unborn baby... You learn from the mistake and remember to Jimmy up and or pull out in the future..

I will say this, he hired some damn good attorneys that got him 20 years rather then life without parole.. Money does buy you freedom..

That's the story and he's a free man today with a decent bank roll from his NFL playing days.. He can start a new life and he is set up..

Based all on the word of Watkins... Unless Carruth was a total dumbass, why would he pay a guy to kill someone and drive in the same damn car?

Plus, why would Carruth kill his baby mama over a BABY? That makes ZERO sense. All these guys are knocking up girls all over the country. NONE of them resort to killing them just to save a few dollars. He did not kill her over her keeping the baby. That bullshit does not compute. So what was the motive? Her drug ties to Watkins is much more plausible.

Most jurors thought OJ did it after being interviewed but the public prosecutors didn't offer up enough evidence to convict they said by law.. Glove doesn't fit you must acquit.

Agree the procecution ****** up the case and the defense pounced. Not sure I agree that they usually get it right. In the end as someone who in general keeps his nose clean I hope you’re right.
