Ronald, a lot of people crap on downtown. Here are my opinions as a starter, and anyone can feel free to add on:

* I'm ez to please. Give me a hotel-room, a sportsbook, and table-games...and I'm happier than a pig in shit. So, I love downtown.

First off, I'd say that you have to be aware that a venture 2 blocks away from downtown is on you. You are then venturing into sketchy territory. The main Fremont St area is patrolled pretty well, tho.

There's been a good bit of construction downtown, so some changes in last few years. What do I like about downtown? I'll work from El Cortez toward Plaza:

* El Cortez. Can find good blackjack rules here. The DD and SD are pretty good. Granted, it's known as the "Sweaty Spaniard" for a reason. Surprisingly, a pretty good restaurant in there. Sportsbook linked to Station lines.

* Two restaurants that I frequent quite often about two blocks from El Cortez. The Greek restaurant and a pretty solid hot-dog stand.

* Fremont. Has an ok sportsbook, used to better (imho). Has a buffet that has some daily specials, like all-u-can-eat Steak.

* Binion's. Used to have good blackjack. Does have a nice hamburger shop and a nice deli, too. Granted, this place has gone downhill...and most attribute it to management turning over to the Binion daughter.

* Four Queens. Has a nice restaurant called Magnolia's. Can get some nice specials on coupons or Birthday month.

* The D. Go upstairs, has the classic Sigma Derby horse-machine.

* Downtown Grand. Much better than it was as former Lady Luck, which was rightly viewed as a dump.

* Golden Nugget. Now we're talking! Pretty good poker-room, and stand-alone sportsbook. I always try to stay a few nites at GoldNugg in summer to go to the shark-tank pool; very cool. Rooms are strip-quality (imho), for half the cost of strip-rates.

* California. I've mentioned in previous post. I think it's gone downhill a little. But I still go out of my way to go to 2nd-floor Ice Cream shop. The Hawaiians (and Orientals) love this place.

* Golden Gate. Had a very good breakfast restaurant that moved out. For that reason, I downgrade them.

If I had to rate where I'd WANT to stay downtown...the clear answer is Golden Nugget. If GNugg is 1st...my 2nd choice would not be obvious. I'd probably say Downtown Grand. If u keep an eye open, can sometimes find good deals on downtown hotels.

If any of my info is outdated...feel free to update.

3/2 single deck 5$ blackjack at the Cortez is the best.If you haven't eaten at the Carson Kitchen, you should try it. It's one of my favorite restaurants I've eaten at over the past 6 months or so.

4 Queens doesn't have "resort fee" and if u walk across the street and go up to Binion's rooftop pool with your room key--you can get a great view with a swim.

The El Cortez? you got to be kidding me?

I've seen rooms go for six and eight dollars there.. one of my sons got a hotel management degree at UNLV and interned at the El Cortez. When he was taking a tour of the building on his first day he noticed the patterns in the carpet moving and commented on the amazing carpet.. The manager told him "those are lice, we have a carpet lice problem here, but dont worry we're going to take care of it"

Good list, Goater. Here are my thoughts:

- Downtown Grand is best hotel downtown. Newest rooms, centrally located. Far enough away from Fremont street noise and losers.
- I avoid the Nugget. Too much like a Strip casino. Overcrowded. Takes too long to get from room to street. Too big.
- Cortez has come a long way. Have stayed there many times. Clean, no carpet lice. Nice lounge.
- Suites at Golden Gate are nice. Avoid regular rooms that face Fremont.
- Have stayed at The D, Fremont, Main Street. All fine.
