NO preseason favorite 8 games out would be 45-1 that early in the season, being a public team has nothing to do with it. And public perception was actually extremely down on the Dodgers at the time, so again I don't think being a public team applied.

And on a side note that has nothing to do with the point we are debating, I do think the Dodgers ultimately pull away while winning the division.

They're probably a favorite to win their division. They're a top two talent wise team in the nl, if they get in the dance which they're greatly favored to do it was a great bet that leaves you with a ton of options
