If the rest of the team can stay healthy, they should be fine. They lost their #1 receiver in the first game last year.

Exactly! Jacksonville was good in spite of Bortles, not because of him. Teams with a great dominating defense don't seem to have a long shelf life in current NFL.

Would love to see odds on a bet that they don't make the playoffs

They caught a lot of breaks and swept the division in 10-6 season. If luck and Watson healthy, they lose 2 division games at least finish 8-8 or worse and miss. They had their shot with NE on the ropes. I think far better chance they miss playoffs next season than make another conference championship

This signing means nothing. Look at what the Bears did last year. Signed Glennon to a similar contract, but that didn't slow them down trading up and drafting Trubisky at no.2 overall. He's definitely getting some compeition later via free agency or draft. Signing him is just a safety blanket if they fail to get someone that they like in FA or draft. They just couldn't afford taking that risk and go into the season without QB. But I guess they could resign him for less money. Don't think he would get this kind of a deal anywhere else in the league.

He will never be a QB that can carry his team. If the Jag's defense falters, they are 8-8 or worse. Everyone else in their division is going to improve.

Tough call. If the Jags are ever going to win, it's going to be now, so getting a QB for the future probably isn't the move.

And Cousins would screw them financially.

The coaching staff there really thinks they can make something out of Bortles. Gotta admit, he was worlds better this year than he was the year before.

It seems like a bad move but the Jags D is so good that Bortles doesn't have to be elite for them to win, he just needs to take care of the ball and hand it to Fournette.
