the motivation of the Memphis Tigers in this game. They lost to UCF in the AAC Championship, and a win there likely would have propelled them to play Auburn in the Peach Bowl as the Group of 5 representative. They won’t be nearly as excited to play 7-5 Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl.

I think Iowa State is the better team in this matchup and it will be more motivated than Memphis. It will be the first bowl game for the Cyclones since 2012. Head coach Matt Campbell has done a tremendous job of turning this program around in just his second season. There will be a big following from the fans as well, so it won’t be as big of a home-field advantage for Memphis as most anticipate.

The Cyclones were agonizingly close to going 12-0 this season. All five of their losses came by 10 points or less, with four by 7 points or fewer. So they had a chance to win every game they played in. They beat Oklahoma on the road and TCU at home, the two teams that played in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Iowa State’s defense will be the best unit on the field. They held opponents to just 21.0 points per game on the season, which is extremely impressive in the offense-loaded Big 12. They held opponents to 10 points less than their season averages. Memphis gave up 33.4 points per game this season with one of the worst defenses in the country.

There’s no question Memphis QB Riley Ferguson and the offense have some firepower. But it’s also worth noting how easy of a schedule they faced this season. Navy ranked 60th in total defense, and that was the best defense they played all year. They actually got to face six defenses that ranked in the Bottom 10 in the country, or 120th or worse. This Iowa State stop unit will be by far the best that Ferguson and company have seen to date.

The Cyclones are 10-2 ATS in all games this season and are consistently undervalued. Campbell is 9-2 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record as the coach of Iowa State. Memphis is 7-21 ATS in its last 28 games as a home favorite of 7 points or less. Look for the Cyclones to win this game outright.
