As the trade deadline approaches, the possibility of the Tigers dealing right-hander Justin Verlander seems more realistic than ever before, suggests Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The Tigers, who own the American League’s third-worst record (36-43) and are trying to cut payroll, would be willing to eat some of the money remaining on Verlander’s contract, per Cafardo. In addition to what’s left of his $28MM salary this season, Verlander is due $28MM in each of the next two seasons. Additionally, Verlander has a $22MM vesting option for 2020, but that will only trigger if he finishes in the top five of the AL Cy Young voting in 2019. Of course, it’s also worth noting that the 34-year-old has full no-trade rights.

Per Jon Heyman, the Tigers and Astros are reportedly still talking about Justin Verlander. Like they were in July and last week and like they’ll probably continue to do at least until August 31, when the playoff rosters must be set.

By now you know the parameters: Verlander is owed the remainder of his $28 million salary for this season and will make $28 million in each of the next two seasons and he has a vesting option worth $22 million in 2020. He’s having a bit of a down year but has shown flashes of brilliance and still has great stuff, so the Astros could use him for their injury-riddled rotation. He may be the piece that could put them over the top in fact. Or not, because there are no guarantees in life and baseball. The Astros don’t want to give up to much for him. The Tigers need a lot for him. So they continue to talk.

Since it's after the deadline, Verlander would have to clear waivers first and he may not.

Verlander has already passed through revocable waivers. Tigers are free to trade with any team now. If Astros get him it would more than likely be players not on their 40 man roster because those players would have to pass through waivers also to be part of a trade.
