Cristiano Ronaldo Accused of Massive Tax Evasion After 'Biggest Leak in Sporting History'

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has accused of using shell companies in the British Virgin Islands to avoid tax on tens of millions of Euros, in an early part of what threatens to be a seismic set of leaks as Football Leaks collaborate with a network of major newspapers.
Spanish newspaper El Mundo is one of 12 newspapers working together to pore over 1.9TB of data sent to Der Spiegel - and the Spaniards report that Ronaldo was 'protecting' his income from 2009, before he even moved to Real Madrid.

Ronaldo is said to have concealed "74.8 million euros via an offshore company called Tollin, registered in the British Virgin Islands", according to Friday evening's report - with more funds secreted elsewhere.
The Portuguese superstar is far from the only high-profile name to be implicated though - with reports that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho concealed €12m in a 'system' set up by agent Jorge Mendes. That concealment is said to have been spotted in a Spanish tax audit, leading to the recovery of €4.4m in back-payments and fines.

Looks worse than messis tax avoidance

Maybe Spain needs to take a chill pill on taxes on foreigners if they want to continue attracting the world's best...47% is quite high.

This This This!! Almost nobody can see it this way.

This is what has killed business in the US. Refusal to lower corporate tax. Jobs go overseas mainly for this reason nowadays. Most of your US tech giants have the majority of their business elsewhere now. Spain is actually worse, believe it or not. They had the chance to lower taxes a few years ago, but instead they doubled down, and now much of their country is a freaking mess right now. Over half the kids 18-25 have no jobs, overall unemployment is at 22%, trains don't run on time anymore, certain places you have to spend 45min in line just to buy a Coke, it's pretty bad. All because business can't function under those rates. The governments need to change, not the citizens. The citizens with real money or businesses are reacting the way you would expect somebody to.

Ok, rant over. For these high tax countries though, if you're rich and you actually have the choice, you're gonna say F off and try to keep some of your money. Media will try to get the non-rich all upset by making them look like such bad people when this stuff comes out, but you would do the same.

I had friends in France when they raised the tax rate to 75% over €1 million. They were all seriously thinking about leaving the country. Some did. France pulled the plug on this after just a year or two citing meager returns. The big boys simply left or went out of their way to "make less." Now the top bracket is 45% BUT they have VAT and Wealth Tax, which basically is roughly a .5%-1% tax on your net worth, EACH YEAR.

Trouble with US citizenship is they tax you US even if you're living full time somewhere else. Only major country that does that. So if you're playing in Spain or England, and you're a US citizen, you're still paying US taxes. No sense.

I feel after these cases with Messi, Neymar, and now Ronaldo, you'll have superstars eyeing up England and Germany and for the first time in recent history, perhaps taking a pass on Real or Barça and even PSG. Could be a shift in football superpowers over the coming decade in this way, not completely dramatically, but to the extent that you might see the superstars of the future favoring Man City, Man United, Bayern, Chelsea, Arsenal, etc...

I think Canada does it too. Not 100%, but I know for awhile the US was the only country you weren't allowed to ever completely leave, unless you renounced citizenship, and even then you had to pay US taxes for 10 years. Land of the free!

I didn't know that about France, but that makes a lot of sense. I've said it before on this forum, you have to treat your rich people well too, or they'll leave, and your state/country goes to shit when they do.
