You can easily get 4 years out of this which then does not make the big tag look that bad long term.

I think for like $1600 you can get a pretty solid one, the small sony's are way overpriced and in my opinion a 11-12 inch screen is way too small unless you travel all the time. The majority of laptop users are home users or people just using it in a few different rooms now so get a stronger type one.

That sounds like a bit over-priced, and not as big of a beast for the dollar - the new intel chips CRUSH the current ones (like you have listed - that's not even top of top of the line)and are much cheaper. In 6 months, you'll probably get a much more robust piece of laptop for less than that.

Dump the blu-ray drive, and make sure your Hard drive is 7200 RPM - otherwise all that RAM will choke.
If you're gonna go top of the line, go for an even faster HD, if available (9600?) and double the RAM to 4 Gigs. 2 should be adequate, though, with a 7200 speed drive - unless you're looking to play Unreal 3 engined/next generation games. Right now, though - you'd have an adequate system for current software for 3 years, but at a premium price.

Also, if you're going to upgrade to Microsoft Vista, then 4 gigs is highly recommended -- also, the fastest RPM hard drive you can get.

For about 1/3 that cost, you can get most of that stuff or at least 2/5 the cost using coupon codes from gotapex.com.

I would wait on blu-ray anything for now, even though it likely will do better than HD DVD (I am 99% sure the pr0n industry is going blu ray, so that means everyone else will).

Additionally, XP Pro is worthless, unless you're running 2 processors - and commercial laptops don't even do that. Also - only a handfull of software packages even support dual procs.

If you want to build a good general use Laptop, you can probably build one that's good for 3 years at Dell for about 1k$ - pending what other stuff you want (and using rebates/discounts you can find easily online). If you just use it for movies and web surfing and maybe some spreadsheet crap, then there's really no need to spend more than that. You can even get a pimp ass widescreen laptop with a sweet hardware spread for less than 1,500 (if you do it right, less than 1,200)

Also, go with Dell if you don't have a good hookup to fix your laptop (on the very cheap) and get their 2 or 3 yr warrenty. Laptops are breaking a lot less than they did 3-5 years ago, but they always have issues because they aren't built to take any kind of accident (or spill or ashes heh).

I'm spec'n out a laptop for playin cards on - but I'm still waiting to see how things shape out with the legislation and neteller before I pull the trigger. I'm waiting for the right deal, though - but you can get some sick deals if you shop a bit for coupon codes online.

I'm looking at getting a laptop that can handle a drop or a spill, and the Gateway NX560X looks pretty sweet. Computer Shopper did a test to see what laptops could handle, and this one came out with high marks and under $1400 (July 06 issue).

When I order a computer I ask for the specs given in that magazine, because the computer company sends in the very best for an article. That way, if they send you less (which they have!), you can always insist on those specs. Example: I got one of the best sound cards with a great surround sound system, but when I first got the computer they had put in a cheaper sound card which left the rear speakers for dead. When I found out, they had to send me the original sound card mentioned in the article, which was almost $300.
