Report: NCAA, AFCA has talks about eliminating kickoffs

The kickoff could soon be a thing of the past.
According to Dennis Dodd of CBS, the American Football Coaches Association board of trustees and the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee have had “preliminary discussions” about removing kickoffs from college football games. Player safety is the source of the “informal talks,” Dodd’s report says.
Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby is the chairman of the oversight committee. He referred to the kickoff as “the most dangerous play in the game.” Still, any potential change is still a ways away.

Both entities are reviewing injury data to gauge the impact of kickoffs. Preliminary indications are that injuries occur at a higher rate on kickoffs, according to sources.

Any rules change probably won’t come until after the 2017 season. Eliminating kickoffs has not yet been a discussion for the NCAA rules committee, according to its secretary-rules editor Rogers Redding.

However, rules changes typically bubble up to the committee from coaches and administrators. The AFCA acts in an advisory role to the NCAA rules committee. The oversight committee vets any changes by the rules committee before approving them.

they should just have some gladiator/ninja warrior-like obstacles around the sidelines for players from opposing teams to compete for possessions. Obviously for first kickoff of the game it is jousting at centerfield.


Half-time is a round of assault with opposing teams back-up QBs throwing footballs instead of shooting tennis balls.

Instead of OT the NFL can enact a dancing segment and have a panel of impartial judges score the players routines from league offices. That way the home team numbers don't get too big an advantage.

Why when someone gets hurt they all seem to forget that dotted line we all have signed since grade school....that stated....."SERIOUS INJURY or even DEATH can occur" its funny.....as old as I am my dad had the same paperwork to sign in school....nothing has changed other than we want excuses for everything. This is a horrible idea and every change that has been made since the late 90s has made this an embarrassment to all of us that have played the game. Played flag football for too many years! It was full contact flag(USFTL). We had kick offs and extra points with NO pads or helmet.
