My experience is... take as much memory as you can. HDD, processor - nothing is as much important as memory (for betting purposes).
512 MB is not enough, I suffer with that. 1GB min, better 2 GB.

...And whatever laptop you get, don't be a bonehead like myself and leave it laying around in places it might be stepped on by your very active 5 year old son resulting in the destructiion of the screen and weeks of repair time only to be told after 8 weeks that it can't be repaired.....Or something like that.....

They may have addressed this problem by now, but I've personally witnessed 4 compaq laptops that have had the power source break off the motherboard, effectively turning the computer into a paperweight.
I suggest, if you go with the Compaq, that you be very gentle with it where the power adaptor plugs into the computer.

Get a few issues of Computer Shopper if you're not in a rush. That way you'll be informed enough to get the best value for your money in a constantly changing market. Easy to buy a so-so laptop. The magazine identifies the winners.

You can get a really nice dual processor for a few hundred more. Check out Acer. I had an HP and went with Acer and it is sweet.

You might wanna consider looking at a referbished one. Those things do come with a full warranty.
Dell offering 20% of Inspiron models priced over 1299, so would be in your price range after discount. Check it out for sure. Every time I shop for notebooks I keep coming back to Dell. Have used a Inspiron 6000 for last year and love it.

You must be build your own pc to assure max strength also no matter what company you choose. A model in the store or on a website is a basic unit only and not high powered.

Guys no offense..
In my country is Acer total noname. They use in every small series of laptops absolutelly different parts (once CD-RW is Toshiba a day later something else...). Maybe it it different in US...
I am not fan of brands - I just read on forums what is experience of others - and I have no problem to buy a noname if the references are good. But Acers are the worst.
And Acer Ferrari? Buying a (fishy) design and pay for it over 200% of price of the same good. Not for me...
