and bear, if you knew anything about baseball, you'd know that home runs and stolen bases are the most overrated stat's in regard to winning baseball games going. in this cubs guys case playing in that high scoring park and bashing a couple of extra homers will hardly help the cubs pennant drive. bring him up in june, not before.

while it doesn't matter since his bat should more than make up for it.

so while we all know Theo HAS to say he needs more seasoning... There is an element of truth to it in regards to defense.

162 games is a long season for these college guys that advance rapidly thru the minors

the cubs play a bit more day games in the sun... It can wear you down .

Last year Bryant played 138 games, you want him fresh for October. Pennants are not won in April.

but yeah I think the majority of cubs fans see that extra year as huge... As the window for the cubs should be open for at least 5-6 years and most didn't even think it would open until 2016. Thus year is kind if a bonus

This is an incredibly smart decision. It's a long season, and he's a great prospect. Get him in back in the minors, let him rake for a bit to keep his confidence going and by summer he'll be in the lineup. It's what is done with most prospects in this position. Putting him in the show too early could derail his career. Happens too often.

To 3 straight 5th place finishes?

Cub fans are delusional in thinking championships can be planned and won in the off-season.

Bartman is real. Epstein winning in Chicago is not.

I'm not saying this can't change, but when he came to Chicago he was supposed to have been moving the needle after 3 seasons, which he has not.

this is the start of the AFTER 3 seasons right?

its up to the team to perform, but i'm pretty sure that any GM or President in baseball would LOVE to be in the position with Epstein's current roster and top rated farm system.

everything was bleak in 2011 but now the future looks very promising for Cub fans

Yes he has. Only a fool right now would look only at the W-L the last 3 seasons. The franchise is in infinitely better shape and it will be evident soon.

The goal is to consistently make the playoffs and win world series'. Not to win a few more games the first few seasons. It's basically irrelevant whether they finished 2nd or 5th some of the last 3 seasons.

                        "if" that ever happens.

point of thread is that the Chicago Cubs cannot afford to be patient. They really can't. The have an ace pitcher Jon Lester who is in his prime NOW. Kris Bryants best years could very well be his first couple seasons
                        ( See David Freese)

Windows of opportunity do not last long very often and the Cubs may fukk up a chance to win a world series this year if they keep taking the attitude that they are planning for the future.

Yeah, but waiting a couple of weeks for Kris Bryant isn't too big a deal. If we were talking about half a season, then yeah. But 9 games?

yeah i guess i agree i just didnt like the interview i saw on tv. Felt like Epstein wasn't keeping it real.

its always possible that Bryant may start out the season with a slump and if he gets called up instead of being on the opening day roster maybe the Cubs feel that will be less pressure for him to live up to... especially if the guy he replaces in the line-up isnt contributing.

They may also want to see what they get out of Alcantara and Olt at 3B.

Yes, probably Olt. It may actually be Olt vs. Coghlan to decide whether Bryant stays at 3B or goes to LF. Olt has a decent ceiling if he can actually figure it out, and he's good defensively too. The problem is he's teased at the plate before and then regressed, so who knows. If he stays at 3B the Cubs could eventually have an absurdly powerful (HR-wise) lineup across the board.

Cubs ownership is totally disrespecting its loyal fan base. First off the stadium is in shambles. Bleachers closed. Then they pull this stunt and prove that they don't truly care about making a run this year. Put your best team on the field!!

in 2021 Jon Lester will be retired.

Cubs cant just assume they will have top of the rotation aces like Lester and Arrieta in 2022

They may have others. I suppose it's possible, but it's highly unlikely that keeping Bryant in AAA for a few weeks is going to cost the pennant.

If the situation was reversed and not starting on the MLB for 12 day roster would be to Boras' advantage what would he do? He would say send the kid down. It is business and the Cubs are pressing their advantage now when they can and want to make Boras wait one more year before holding his client for ransom vs the Cubs.

Cub fans are delusional in thinking championships can be planned and won in the off-season.

Bartman is real. Epstein winning in Chicago is not.

I'm not saying this can't change, but when he came to Chicago he was supposed to have been moving the needle after 3 seasons, which he has not.
Theo Epstein's work in Chicago is following a similar game plan as his work in Boston. Spend the first couple of seasons building up the farm system and then make a move to compete. If you are a Cubs fan this is the plan you want him to follow as historically he is very good at developing young talent and digging up a diamond in the rough or two. What you don't want is Epstein relying on FA as his big signings need seem to pan out for him.
