CHARGERS, RAIDERS ANNOUNCE JOINT EFFORT TO BUILD NFL STADIUM IN CARSON

        AP
        Updated 1 min ago
CARSON, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers are planning a shared stadium in the Los Angeles area if both teams fail to get new stadium deals in their current hometowns.

The teams announced plans for the $1.7 billion stadium in Carson in a joint statement Thursday night.

The statement says the teams have tried for years to find stadium solutions in Oakland and San Diego, and both may be forced to move to remain economically viable.

"We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises," the teams said.

Division rivals using a shared stadium? I'll believe it when I see it. Something fishy here.

I highly doubt that will happen. It's just preliminary talk right now, taxpayers will definitely vote it down.

Rams and Raiders not in the same division pal.

not even in the same conference.

                where the hell is Carson?

why not build it in Downtown LA or near the Ocean ?

it would be cool if it was on a Bay so people could tailgate in the water like do in Tennessee for the Vols games.

It's the Raiders and Chargers, not the Rams.

                      the San Diego Raiders???

                      lol it would never happen.

San Diego can't even support one team.

people in san diego would rather go to the beach than watch football. One of the worst sports towns in the country.

however not quite as bad as minnesota

San Diego can't afford to fix potholes, little chance they can finance new stadium.

Bear. Just shut the hell up. You know NOTHING about the greater Los Angeles area. Why do you have to make a complete and total fool out of yourself time and time again?

For the rest of you know-it-alls, if you actually took the time to read everything in the story, yoyu would know that the Raiders have already told the NFL that they would agree moving to the NFC West, avoiding the two Divisional teams sharing a stadium problem. The most likely trading partner would be Arizona.

This may be a leverage play by both teams. The very fact that they named Carson as a potential stadium host is very suprising seeing as the owner of the Rams owns a huge parcel of property across from the Forum in Inglewood, and AEG, the owners of the Los Angeles Kings have teamed up with Insurance Giant Farmers to build a Stadium in Downtown Los Angeles, near the Staples enter. Wile the Inglewoode property is not a very popular area, it still is milew ahead of Carson, which is on the South end of Southern California and is famous for it's oil refineries. You got to love that smell. Downtown is by far the best answer.

I would put my money on the Rams and Raiders teaming up and sharing the expense of a new stadiium in Inglewood. The stadium plays goes up for a vote in March. The great thig about this loation is if the Raiders and Rams play like thy have been playing recently, the Jet noise from the planes approaching Los Angeles International Airport will drown out the boos. Remember, Raider Owner Mark Davis is totally in love with a Downtown Los Angeles Strip Club.

Dodger Stadium May Be Considered For Temporary Home For NFL Team

According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News, along with the obvious temporary locations, the LA Memorial Coliseum and Rosel Bowl, Dodger Stadium is also a possibility:

NFL vice president Eric Grubman, who is spearheading the Los Angeles efforts, confirmed with the Los Angeles News Group that the league is likely to begin more serious discussions with various venues within the next few weeks.

The league has set no particular timeline or deadline, but is expected to go forward with negotiations for one or more leases at the league level that would be assignable to any club or clubs that gets approved for relocation.

Among the possible sites are the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Rose Bowl, Dodger Stadium and Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

Now that voters in San Diego have resoundingly rejected the idea of a downtown stadium, it’s two-minute-drill time for the Chargers.

They need to decide by January whether they’re going to make one last-ditch effort to stay in San Diego or move to Los Angeles, where they would be a tenant in the Inglewood stadium being constructed by Rams owner Stan Kroenke.

Nobody thought the Chargers would get the requisite two-thirds majority to pass Measure C, the ballot initiative asking the public to approve an increase in the hotel occupancy tax that would provide $1.15 billion for a proposed $1.8-billion stadium. But the vote became a referendum on the Chargers themselves, and something close to 50% approval would have been a positive sign.

Instead, Measure C got an underwhelming 43%, further eroding any leverage the franchise once had. The clearest options for the Chargers over the next two months are to go back to the city and put all options back on the table — including the idea of a stadium in Mission Valley — or to walk away for good, understanding that they will be “the other” L.A. team and that there’s a decent chance the league would eventually put another team in San Diego.

The NFL has been publicly mum on the matter, and makes it clear that the choice belongs to the Chargers, whose one-year option to join the Rams expires in January and rolls over to the Oakland Raiders. Meanwhile, the Raiders have turned their attention to the possibility of relocating to Las Vegas.

Even if no one at the NFL will say it publicly, the best situation from the league’s perspective would be if the Chargers could find a way to stay in San Diego; the Raiders could find a solution in either Oakland or Las Vegas; and L.A. could remain a one-team town — with an open spot for a second franchise at the Inglewood stadium.

That way, in addition to having a team in the nation’s second-largest market, the Rams, the league could continue to use L.A. as leverage to get stadium deals done in other cities. It’s not pretty, but it’s reality.

Now that voters in San Diego have resoundingly rejected the idea of a downtown stadium, it’s two-minute-drill time for the Chargers.
