if porcello can have somewhat of a year like last year i dont see how boston doesnt win this trade .. the american league east sucks offensively outside of maybe toronto?
the yankees suck .. baltimore lost cruz and markakis and davis is a 200 hitter now apparently... and the rays wont average a high run per game neither

This move probably will convince Max Scherezer to return to Detroit.

if he can regain his 2013 form then maybe Red Sox have some hope.
same thing with Bucholz. Red Sox seem pretty desperate for pitching right now maybe they should give Daniel Bard a call and try him in the rotation again.
As of now the Blue Jays look like the best team in the AL East on paper IMO.

You are an idiot. Porcello won 15 games at the age of 25 last year. Plus, he's a sinker ball pitcher, and those guys tend to struggle early in their careers. Detroit made this trade out of sheer desperation. This isn't an "even swap" deal.

Tori Hunter
tell me who u going to pitch around?
coiner porcello is indeed trash bc he aint going to help the Tigers win a world series
he will never be good enough to be a top 3 in the playoffs
1.Price
2.Scherezer
3. Verlander
thats all u need once the playoffs roll around.
Tigers are the best line-up in baseball by a country mile.
now they need to spend about 30 million on the bullpen and they will be locked and loaded.

Porcello is 5-6 years younger with his best days ahead. Won 15 last year. I'm not saying it looks great on paper in the here and now, but check back in about 5 years. I'd personally rather have Porcello in his prime than Lester on the decline, especially given how much cheaper Porcello will be.

Lester's 2015 salary = same as Porcello, Miley and Masterson combined.

Sox aren't a 5 year plan organization. They have bank to flip roster every season. Hope the kid turns out to be great but they aren't worried about him in 5 years.

Good trade because i think porcello has one year left on contract and he will command 100 million in the market. Tigers wantvto keep price and max long term so porcello is expendable.

You could be right but rumor has it they want to try and keep him which is why they traded porcello. Im sure they will go after him one more time. Will have to wait and see. The tigers have never been afraid to open up the checkbook

Detroit wins this trade. Why trade an everyday player for some arm that gets his turn in the rotation.
What were the BoSox thinking really.

yep. Porcello is a flash in the pan mediocre pitcher anyway. He will never be elite and he does not posess front of the rotation type stuff.

Great trade for Detroit if Cespedes gets that AVG. up a little bit. Tigers have enough pitching, everyone already forgetting about Sanchez. Sanchez is the best pitcher on the team....

Cespedes is a good hitter. He is dynamic too. Basically they traded for him to replace Torii Hunter. They also have another young good looking hitter to play the OF. Bonus is he plays everyday and has a strong arm to boot.
Porcello is a good young pitcher on the rise....but if you sign Scherzer or trade for a decent starter not willing to break bank like maybe Bartolo Colon or Dillon Gee you're not in bad shape if you are Detroit. Anibel Sanchez is still a quality #3 or #4 for Detroit.

Boston picked up 3 decent middle of the roatation guys without giving up any top prospects. Cespedes is a FA after the year and they already had too many OFers. Love these moves because now it sets up for a shields/hamels/Zimmerman deal to be the true ace of the staff.

Someone not knowing about baseball would read this thread and leave with the impression that teams are dumb, eager to send stars for scrubs.
This trade is close to neutral, and may help slightly both teams.
Porcello is barely above average pitcher with groundball tendencies and innings eater. $12 on last year before going to free agency. He will be offered a qualifying offer, so netting a pick for the team when he leaves.
Cespedes is a nice power bat, but his average is a bit low. $10.5 on last year before free agency, by contract cannot be offered QO. This compensates for the $1.5 salary difference and the additional player(s).
So, both players are about worth the same and have equivalent salaries. Boston moves a piece of their overcrowded OF and get a badly needed starting pitcher. Detroit sent a guy from the bottom of their rotation to get a nice power bat. I see both teams being slightly better after trade.
Now, back to the senseless thread...

Bostons front office has basically been fukked in the ass this offseason.
Awful offseason so far. Over paid for Kung Fu Panda, over paid for an aging Hanley Ramirez and they have made already bad pitching staff worse in the last year and a half

Red Sox offense is very solid and well rounded despite trading Cespedes. I think it was a good move for them to build pitching rotation depth.
Offense: Pedroia, Big Papi, Rusney Castillo, Shane Victorino, Sandoval, Will Middlebrooks, Mike Napoli and Allen Craig....very balanced and talented through out their line up.
