#40Typical American cocky attitude in this thread. They lost because they didn't have their best players?
1) "your" best players mostly don't even come from America. When you have guys that are deciding between playing for USA or Dominican it's a joke. You play for your country, not where you may live now because of job opportunities. If I all of a sudden got a great job offer in Tokyo I would go, but I wouldn't consider Japan my country.
2) Wright, Braun, Rollins, McCan, Jeter, Peavy, Oswalt, Roberts, Granderson, Longoria...these aren't your best players? The USA roster is stacked full of MLB All Stars. The Japan lineup has how many? TWO. Dice-K has only been an all star once also I believe.
You guys are nuts. Japan beat the USA because as a team they are better. Individually maybe not, but as a team and as a country they play the sport of baseball better.
Instead of being very ignorant, and very cocky about USA, how about just simply saying Japan was the better team and congrats on the win? Would that be too difficult to do?
Look at the list provided. What if Lincecum and Sabathia had pitched in this game instead of Roy Oswalt, who was a great pitcher 5 years ago but now he is completely washed up. We followed him up with Grabow who I have never even heard of.
Japan would have MAYBE scratched across 2 runs if we threw Lincecum followed by Beckett, Lester, Sabathia, I could go on and on.
We honestly would have mercy ruled the Japanese if our best had been there. If they allow mercy rule in semi finals. If not we score 15 runs with our best possible lineup.
We had Adam Dunn batting clean up. He is not in the top 200 baseball players from America.
We had Mark De La Rosa starting. Are you kidding me? He is not in the top 50 hitters in America.
Read the list provided of our best hitters. We could have put a lineup out there than won every game by mercy rule.
Where was Matt Holliday? Where was Chase Utley?
Where was Beckett? Lester?
We lost to the Japanese because we did not play even close to our best players. A few of our best were in there but nowhere close to the lineup we could have put out there. And definately not the pitching that we could have put out there.
Oswalt followed by Grabow, that is laughable compared to the firepower we can put on the mound.
We have 300 pitchers in America right now much better than Grabow. Probably 100 better than Oswalt.
A fact is a fact and the fact here is that we did not put close to our best lineup out there. If we had the result would have been a blowout of the Japanese.Comment -

and nobody in their right mind would call a slap singles hitter the best hitter in baseball
dice k is a lot closer to top tier than ichiro
personally i want a pitcher who can go more than 5-6 innings for the best pitcher in baseball award.
ichiro isnt CLOSE to the best hitter in his division, much less league, much less majorsComment -

Top two best hitters:
#2 Ty Cobb – The “Georgia Peach” held the title of most career hits for almost half a century which at one time was thought of as an unbreakable task. Cobb, was not the most liked player in the game, but you can’t ignore his numbers. Cobb entered the Hall of Fame with 4,191 hits and a career average of .367.
#1 (tie) Pete Rose - The All Time Hit King. Just like Cobb, Rose wasn’t well-liked by many fellow ball players, but like Cobb as well, his numbers don’t lie.
Both "slap" hitters.

#63Beckett, Lincecum, Halladay, Sabathia, Oswalt, Hamels, Webb, Haren, Santana, and Lester are easily better than Dice K. And there are a lot of pitchers right around him in value. The walks are going to catch up with him at some point. He stranded 80.6% of runners, which isn't going to last.Comment -

#70Rich Harden can't even stay healthy. Started just 13 games in '06-07. Plus half his games last season were in the NL.
JP Howell is a RELIEVER.
Cliff Lee had a good year, but he was coming off a 5-8 6.29 ERA season. Plus he was pitching in NON PRESSURE games.
Jake Peavy is a great pressure pitcher. NOT! Got smoked in other WBC games. Not to mention in playoffs and play-in games.
Joba Chamberlain started just 12 games and was a lousy 4-3.
Justin Duchscherer..... 10-8.... I guess I must've failed math cause 18-3 looks a lot better.
Tim Lincecum 18-5... not as good as 18-3.
CC Sabathaia... 17-10... half his starts in the NL. Also not as good as 18-3.
Roy Halladay.... 20-11.... not as good as 18-3.Comment
