Stan Van Gundy is a Popular Man
The Warriors are pursuing him to become their head coach. The Pistons are pursuing him to become their head coach AND director of all basketball operations.

The Warriors obviously have the better roster, but having total control to build his own team in Detroit could have its appeal.

Stan Van Gundy's seriously considering Pistons offer of full control, torn on that opportunity vs. coaching Warriors, sources tell Yahoo.

Looking more and more like Stan will be the Man in Detroit.

Detroit and Van Gundy are discussing a deal centered on five years and $35 million for him to become president and coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Golden State officials met with Van Gundy on Monday in Florida and left convinced he was leaning strongly toward the offer of total control in Detroit. Golden State isn't willing to make an allowance for Van Gundy to have final say on player personnel. The Warriors would make him one of the higher paid coaches in the NBA, but Detroit owner Tom Gores is willing to do "whatever it takes," one source said, to recruit Van Gundy.

Golden State had been willing to pay Van Gundy in the five-year, $25 million to $30 million range to coach, but officials ultimately don't believe money is the motivating factor for Van Gundy in his decision. The allure of personnel control and an ability to build his own organizational culture and roster has pulled him toward Detroit.

He probably has a long-range plan to build a team to his liking. (oh and he is also getting $5 to 10 million more over the same 5 years that Warriors offered if he accepts Detroit job).

He could always get rid of them and start fresh.

I liked SVG for Warriors. However, if he wants full control, GS is not the place to get it. Current ownership has a very good record, going from 21 wins to 47-51. Most of turnaround was personnel, via good draft picks and nice trades (mortgaging the future, as draft picks are scarce for next 4 years!). So, they want a coach to win it now, not a guy to build a team. So, if SVG wants to build, Detroit work is his best fit.

naive post Dirty, you're better than this. literally EVERY coach who stays around long enough gets fired. coaches are hired to get fired. Van Gundy is not my favorite coach, but saying because he has gotten fired twice that he should not be popular, is at best naive

They may not go with an "accomplished" coach and actually approach Derek Fisher if he retires after the playoffs. They don't seem to be in any hurry though.

LT - yes Derek is on their radar if he retires, no doubt about it, mainly because of the respect he has in the organization and Kobe would give the blessing.

look at what he has done with denver all those years. How many times has he gotten out of the 1st round?

Karl is too old and game passed him by, this was just a money deal for Van Gundy, he knows he cannot win there.

Stan Van Gundy can prolly coach. Just NOT in the NBA. He's got no spine and the inmates rule the asylum. Don't know how you guys can see your better coaches in any sport wag the tail, not vice versa. Tibbs and Pops are examples.

Detroit is a GREAT Basketball city. Our games are always rocking and we do have exciting players to watch. This coach is a welcome addition and it won't take long for team to be in spotlight.
