U-A-B (20-9) at Texas-El Paso (17-11)
The Sports Network
DATE & TIME: Wednesday, March 4th, 9:05 p.m. (et).
FACTS & STATS: Site: Don Haskins Center (12,000) -- El Paso, Texas. Television: None. Home Record: UAB 12-1, UTEP 10-4. Away Record: UAB 7-6, UTEP 5-5. Neutral Record: UAB 1-2, UTEP 2-2. Conference Record: UAB 10-4, UTEP 8-6. Series Record: UAB leads, 5-3.
GAME NOTES: The UAB Blazers and Texas-El Paso Miners jockey for seeding in the upcoming Conference USA Tournament, as the two are set to tip it off at the Don Haskins Center. The Blazers enter the game on a roll, having won seven of their last eight. They'll look to keep the momentum going following Saturday's impressive 82-62 win at East Carolina. At 10-4 in league play, UAB is tied with Tulsa for second place in the C-USA standings behind national powerhouse Memphis. For UTEP star guard Stefon Jackson, the conference's all-time leading scorer, tonight's game will be his last at the Haskins Center, as he and the rest of the Miners celebrate Senior Night. The Miners will try to rebound from Saturday's 86-77 loss at Tulane, their second setback in the last three games. UTEP, which currently holds down the fifth spot in the standings, will close out the regular season at Southern Miss this Saturday night. UAB leads the all-time series, 5-3, which includes wins in four straight meetings with UTEP. The Miners were a 78-73 winner when these teams met on January 21st.
The Blazers boast the league's top field goal percentage, as they are shooting a combined 46.6 percent from the floor. But they used a stifling defensive effort to beat ECU, holding the Pirates to 36.7 percent for the game. The game was tied at 34-34 at halftime, but UAB went on to outscore ECU, 48-28, in the second half. The Blazers held a 22-9 edge in points off turnovers, despite committing only three fewer turnovers than ECU. Robert Vaden and Cameron Moore led the way with 18 points apiece for UAB. Channing Toney tallied 17 points and seven assists, while Howard Crawford finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. UAB can score with anybody in the conference, as the team is putting up a healthy 73.6 ppg. Vaden is averaging a team-high 17.7 ppg and possesses the best range, having knocked down 92 three-pointers on the season (34.5 percent). Delaney is scoring 16.3 ppg, while Kinnard checks in with 15.2 ppg and 8.9 rpg.
In order to beat UTEP, the top priority is obviously trying to stop Jackson, the most prolific scorer in the history of the C-USA. That's easier said than done, considering he continues to stay healthy and put up dazzling numbers (23.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg). Jackson is also among the nation's most consistent free- throw shooters, having knocked down a whopping 245-of-290 freebies (.845) on the season. But should the Miners deploy most of their resources in trying to stop Jackson, sophomore guard Randy Culpepper can make them pay. Culpepper ranks fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.7 ppg. But those two combined for just 11 first-half points against Tulane, as the Miners fell behind early and were never able to recover. UTEP shot just 6-of-23 from the floor in the first half, while Tulane shot 57.7 percent from the field and took a 41-28 halftime lead. Jackson and Culpepper both came alive in the second half, finishing with 23 and 22 points, respectively, but the damage had already been done.
The Blazers may have won four straight in the head-to-head series, but this won't be a cakewalk playing on UTEP's home floor on Senior Night. And it's unlikely that Jackson and Culpepper both get off to slow starts in back-to- back games. Don't be surprised if the Miners pull this one off, further jumbling things near the top of the C-USA standings.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas-El Paso 80, UAB 76

Brock, Sports Networks predictions are 40% at best. I used to look to them for different angles and have noticed they are really clueless.
