Matt Cassel, whom the New England Patriots named as their franchise player in early February, has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cassel has been informed he is being traded to the Chiefs, ESPN.com's John Clayton and ESPN's Michael Smith have confirmed.

The Boston Globe reported on its Web site that official paperwork had been filed with the NFL. The story was first reported by NFL.com.

Cassel had accepted the Patriots' non-exclusive franchise tender, guaranteeing the quarterback at least $14.65 million next season. Cassel faxed his acceptance to the Patriots, the NFL and the NFLPA, but the Patriots also needed to offer him the one-year contract.

The franchise tag's value is the average of the top five salaries for NFL players at a particular position.

Cassel finished 327 of 516 for 3,693 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

It would be the Chiefs' second acquisition of a major member of the Patriots' organization in as many days; the Chiefs traded for linebacker Mike Vrabel on Friday. It also was orchestrated by one as well -- Scott Pioli, the former Patriots vice president of player personnel who this year was hired as the Chiefs' general manager.

Great move for that team. I think that even if Cassel is just above-average he will greatly benefit that team and the potential development of Thygpen.

Very good for the Chiefs. They actually might be a legit team next year.

I guess the Pats aren't worried about Brady's injury.

I like Cassel, but that was really selling a stock at it's highest price by the Pats. Whatever they got for him, was based on one season.

Thigpen is better than Cassell. I don't understand this move.

KC is trying to keep their history alive of trading for a starting QB. How many times have they done it? Steve Deberg, Joe Montana, Elvis Grbac, Trent Green.

Didn't they have Warren Moon at one time?

This is going to be great for the AFC west. Cassell one year wonder will shine next season playing for in one of the worst team in the league. Or he could be another Brady, who played behind Bledsoe before leading his team to the promise land. Not likely though, since he'll be going against two of the NFL best 4 times a season in Cutler and Rivers.

Moon was a backup for KC right before he retired. he started one game. Ron Jaworski started 3 games for KC at the end of his career. Dave Krieg, Steve Bono, Rich Gannon are some other names I recognize. But, I think most of these guys were signed as free agents at the end of their career rather than acquired via trade. KC does seem to be a QB graveyard throughout history.
