Any input appreciated. Thinking of making a move in the near future. Would prefer somewhere close to border, not entrenched deep in the country.

#2Are you saying that you need to live near casinos? What are criteria you think makes a place good for a gambler to live. If you are coming from states, good luck on getting a ****.Comment -

#5I think it's well worth it. As long as I don't move into a totally dry and clean area, I'm sure I can find things to keep me busyComment -

#6Without a more thorough answer to Laker's question, it is hard to give a comprehensive answer.
In general, I would say: the Greater Toronto Area. Toronto is just a great city. You can gamble on-line (like you can anywhere in Canada) - and casinos and horse racetracks are accessible.
But if you have any kind of a balanced life and interests outside gambling, Toronto is the place to be. There are museums, theatre, the film festival, sports (to watch and participate in), music, the lake, restaurants, WOMEN - everything you could want. And if you like the great outdoors, you don't have to go far to find some beautiful spots.
It's a great place for this gambler.
As a recovering addict/alcoholic who grew up here I can assure you that (a) it's not a dry and clean area and (b) there is a thriving recovery community.
Now if you REALLY like the great outdoors and that's a MAJOR priority, you would probably be better off out west in the Rockies. Banff or Whistler or something like that. You can still gamble on-line but you would obviously not be as close to as many casinos and racetracks as in Toronto.
If being close to the border is the major factor, Windsor is probably a good choice. It's right beside Detroit, there's a casino, you can gamble on-line of course. But you miss out on all the stuff Toronto has to offer (it's a 3-4 hour drive I would guess).
Mind you Toronto is much closer to the border at Buffalo. (Couple hours??)Comment -

#7Thanks Mudcat. Thinking about moving to Seattle area, since I know people in Vancouver and could probably rent out a room or something for half the week and just look at it like a 2 hour commute to work or something. I could have them sign up for a Betfair account for me, but I doubt they'd be willing to sit in front of the screen all day trading/hedging all day for me as I direct them over messenger
I'd say about 70% of my dog bets, at one point during their matches, are chalky favorites, so that right there would cut away those losses by either hedging and getting a freeroll instead of watching them blow set leads and breaks in the last sets. Also seems to be a high overreaction on Betfair, a guy goes up a set and he turns into a 1.2 to 1.4 favorite.Comment -

#8BTW, casinos are irrelevant. I'm done with table games. Great outdoors are not a big issue unless I've got something on my tongue. I do prefer city life to quiet small town life though. I'll have to figure out things this month, picking up and moving can't be a rash decision.Comment -

#9If you are considering the US NW, Canada BC area. Consider Victoria, BC. Can get there about as quick as Vancouver. I think Victoria is my favorite city in Canada and rents are cheaper than Vancouver in general. If you want the bigger urban experience, Toronto or Vancouver are good.Comment -

#10Well, I have friends in Burnaby and in Vancouver, so it's not a necessity I live there, I'll look into Victoria. Got to check everything for certain though.Comment -

That way, you could live wherever you want to live, accessing the computer in Vancouver by internet to make your bets. The only thing your friends in Vancouver would really have to do is make sure that they turn your computer back on in the event of a power outage or if your computer crashes.Comment -

#14Originally posted by HalifaxWhy don't you just set up a computer at their place in Vancouver, pay the $50 per month for high-speed internet access so that it's connected to the internet, and connect to that computer from your own computer over the internet using Remote Desktop or VNC ?

I've always said...the other 3/4 of the country can't be wrong. I have to travel to Toronto quite frequently but its in and out and I spend as little time there as possible.
My favourite Canadian cities are...Montreal, Quebec City (if you can speak a bit of french at least), Victoria, Vancouver & Halifax.Comment -

#17Quebec City has a lot of personality. If I was a more adventurous sort of a guy, I might like to go live there and try that whole experience. The Frenchness and the high taxes would be issues for many people but they wouldn't bother me.
However I'm very settled where I am right now.
I haven't been to Halifax for about 10 years but I loved it. I should stop in for a Donair sometime.Comment -

#19Yeah Halifax is beautiful (the city I mean, not the guy posting in this thread). I visited last time the tall ships were in town and it was really quite spectacular.
And yes...KoD is awesome. I have never found a donair like that in Ontario.Comment -

#20Forget Toronto unless you like to pay ever-increasing property taxes while being harrassed by pan-handlers on every corner. Let's not forget the fuckers in city hall who wanted to sneak in a 9% pay raise for themselves - the same fucking NDP fuckers who fucking want to put more social housing in my neighbourhood (Riverdale) just because the fucking leader Jack fucking Lenin is the fucking NDP critic for that portfolio and he used to live here.Comment -

#22Sorry daystrom...Hamilton has you beat for the worst municipal government in Canada.
-They elect a mayor with known mafia connections who is being bankrolled by developers
-City is basically bankrupt and their solution is to build another expressway over the last green space in the city.
-The city has spent over $100 million suing other levels of government over the expressway which is under construction already even though it lacks several major approvals. I guess they just don't get it...when one level of government sues another level of government the only loser is the taxpayer who is footing the bill for both sides. At least mayor DiIanni is finally being charged with election offences after he basically bought his way to power.Comment -
